Yangtze River Cruise

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Jonathan Siskin, one of America’s most widely published travel writers, recently wrote an article for our travel consortia, Ensemble Travel on Yangtze River Cruises.  He noted that there is an old Chinese saying states “If you haven’t traveled the Chang Jian (Long River,) you haven’t been anywhere.” Jonathan added that a Yangtze river cruise ranks high on the A-list of “must do” cruises.

The third largest river in the world, the Yangtze River winds 3,900 miles through the country from west to east cutting through 10 provinces before disgorging its water into the Yellow Sea. The Upper Reaches are the most attractive part to cruise with wild mountain ranges, unbroken ravines, and charming landscapes. Along this 130 mile stretch, the river passes through the Three Gorges. There’s plenty of time to unwind and plenty of opportunities to see the sights and the history of Magical China.

We suggest at least 12 days to enjoy a few nights before and after a Yangtze cruise in cities such as Shanghai, Xian & Beijing, although the cruises are normally only 3 or 4 nights.  Prices begin as low as $2,400 per person, not including airfare. There are trips as long as 23 days, but this is to spend more time in Asia, not a longer cruise experience. Visit www.escortedasiatours.com to see a great selection of packages.
Great video overview of Yangtze River Cruising.

Norwegian Cruise Line: Sustainable Travel

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has been named a finalist in Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s 2008 World Savers Awards. The awards honor 38 travel companies from around the world for their leadership in social responsibility in five key areas: poverty alleviation, cultural and/or environmental preservation, education, wildlife conservation & health.

In 2007 alone, the recycling program saved 2,200 mature trees, 2,300 gallons of gas & 672,000 gallons of water. This translates to enough saved timber resources to produce more than 27.28 million sheets of newspaper; enough gasoline to drive more than 64,500 miles; & enough fresh water to meet the daily fresh water needs of more than 8,960 people.

NCL began recycling used cooking oil from its ships at the Port of Miami in early 2007. More than 15,000 gallons of used cooking oil have been offloaded & donated to an organic farmer in Vero Beach, Fla., who converted the oil to 870 gallons of usable bio-diesel for his farming equipment.

South America Travel Visa

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

A valid passport is required for all international travelers. Please check your passport’s expiration date well in advance of your travel plans as many foreign governments require that your passport be valid for six (6) months after the completion of your travel.

Many tourist visas and/or entry fees for U.S. citizens are valid for MORE than just one trip. For example, if you obtained a tourist visa for a prior trip to Brazil, and you go to Brazil again within 5 years your original visa is still good – you don’t have to buy another for $130. Another example: The $130 tourist entry fee to Chile is good for the life of your passport. So – be sure to check this out with your Atlas Travel specialist before applying (and paying for) new visas. Rules change frequently, so be sure to check when you are planning your trip.

Spain Travel: Tapas! Authentic Spanish Cuisine

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Tapas are canapes served day in & day out in every bar & cafe in Spain. They can be served cold or warm. You can have them as appetizers, or combine them for a full meal. Popular items for tapas are cheese, omlettes, ham, sausage, meatballs, seafood, veggies & bread.

Tapas is a tradition that is believed to have begun in the 19th century in Andalusia, where single slices of cheese or ham were used to “cover” glasses of sherry to deter flies (Spanish verb Tapar means to cover). After finishing their drink people would eat the ham or cheese. Tapas are so much a part of the culture & social scene in Spain, that they invented the verb tapear which means to go & eat tapas!

Want to experience authentic tapas in Spain? You can travel November through March on a 6 night package to Barcelona & Madrid for as low as $619 per person for the hotel, taxes & train between both cities. Or why not prepare your own Tapas in Spain on the Catacurian: Wine & Cruise of the Priorat as featured in Gourmet Magazine, May 2008?
