Europe’s High Speed Trains

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Eurostar
The convenient Eurostar links the UK and continental Europe via the Channel Tunnel, also called “Chunnel,” an engineering marvel that has already transported 75 million riders. Eurostar schedules up to 16 daily services to Paris (2.25 hours) and 9 to Brussels (less than 2 hours).

TGV
TGV stands for “train a grand vitesse” – high-speed train – and the trains certainly live up to the name. The French-owned TGV ranks second in the world for the fastest train behind Japan’s Nozomi.

Talgo
Talgo is the maker of Spain’s high-speed trains. The Talgo 200 connects major cities in Spain. Equipped with smooth, streamlined cars, these trains average 140 miles an hour.

Thalys
The striking red-and-gray Thalys is Europe’s newest high-speed international train. The Thalys service has become so popular that many trains are fully booked, despite the fact that there are 24 Paris-Brussels and 6 Paris-Amsterdam departures daily from the Gare du Nord.

Norwegian Epic : Blue Man Group on NCL Epic

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Posted:         May 20, 2009
Author:       Norwegian Cruise Line
Category:   Press Release
Topic:           Blue Man Group to Headline NCL Epic’s Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) today announced it is changing the face of cruise line entertainment on its next generation of Freestyle Cruising ship, Norwegian Epic. In another industry first, the company will welcome Blue Man Group, performing in the 685-seat Epic Theater. Blue Man Group is best known for their wildly popular theatrical shows and concerts which combine music, comedy and multimedia theatrics to produce a totally unique form of entertainment. The blissful party atmosphere created at their live events has become the trademark of a Blue Man Group experience and beginning in the summer of 2010 will be seen for the first time ever at sea only on Norwegian Epic.

“Norwegian Cruise Line has spent 42 years breaking the boundaries of traditional cruising and redefining what it means to be innovative. Now, with Norwegian Epic, we are re-inventing cruise ship entertainment by offering multiple entertainment options for every taste and age,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “Having a world-class creative organization like Blue Man Group headline the entertainment on Norwegian Epic will provide our guests with a sensory experience unlike any other at sea.”

More Entertainment Venues, Offerings

Norwegian Epic will have multiple, specially-designed entertainment venues throughout the ship so that guests can choose from a wide variety of entertainment each evening of their cruise. No longer will entertainment be focused on two nightly shows in one large main theater. Norwegian Epic takes Freestyle Cruising to the next level by offering a number of entertainment options in specially-designed venues, some offered for the first time ever at sea, with choices to appeal to a broad audience.

Spiegel Tent: On Norwegian Epic, guests will find the only “big top” at sea. In this intimate 265-seat theater-in-the-round, famed producer/director Neil Goldberg will present Cirque Dreams® and Dinner. This one of a kind interactive theatrical dining experience will be performed in the air, while juggling dinner courses, with music, mayhem and acrobatic imagination. During this two-hour show, guests will marvel in amazement and become part of a celebration of spectacle and fantasy. The entire experience will be unlike anything else at sea.

Headliners Comedy Club: This 280-seat comedy club will feature the hilarious improvisational comedy of The Second City, as Norwegian continues its exclusive partnership with the famed troupe. For nearly 50 years, The Second City has honed the skills of comedic legends such as Bill Murray, Chris Farley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gilda Radner and John Belushi. The ensemble will perform a special customized comedy revue of satirical skits, hilarious songs and inventive improvisation. The venue’s design centers on a show lounge format with a small raised stage, concrete floors and brick walls with a full bar.

Fat Cats: Guests on board Norwegian Epic can sit back and relax listening to the cool vibes of jazz and blues in this 200-seat jazz club. Fat Cats will feature nightly live blues and jazz performances by world-class talent. The urban setting creates a hipster vibe complete with full bar and comfortable leather sofas and chairs.

Epic Casino: This appropriately named casino is Norwegian’s largest casino at sea, spanning more than 13,000 square feet. It features an elegant Monte Carlo inspired design theme and is open to Taste, the Atrium restaurant below, and to the excitement of Bar Central above. Here, guests will find many opportunities to try their luck including 340 of the latest slot machines; along with gaming tables featuring poker, black jack, roulette and craps. And, with the most rewarding Players Club Program at sea there will be something for everyone, from the novice to the high roller. Cascades Bar, with a grand central crystal chandelier, serves as the casino’s centerpiece.

Epic Theater: In addition, the theater will be home to another featured show which will be announced later this year.

Galapagos Cruises

Monday, May 18th, 2009

galapagosglobusGalápagos Islands…Overview of what you can expect to see in each island:

North Seymour Island:
Known for its nesting colony of frigate birds, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, sea lions, and marine iguanas.

Hood Island:
The most southeastern island featuring quite eroded lava terrain. See Galápagos sea lions, lava lizards, Nazca boobies, and the only island with a Waved Albatrosses colony (May-December). Also see the famous blowhole!

Floreana Island:
See flamingos that inhabit a brackish-water lagoon, and other birds like ducks, stilts, and sandpipers. Great snorkeling here for close-up views of marine life that includes sea lions, rays, sea turtles, and possibly the Galápagos penguin. This island is also the site of Post Office Bay, where you learn about early inhabitants and adventures of pirates and whalers.

Santa Cruz Island:
The second-largest island boasts the largest human population, giant tortoises in the wild, and the CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION. The highlands are great for bird watching, walking through a Scalesia forest, and seeing the twin pit craters, Los Gemelos.

Tower Island:
Due to its northern isolation and the effect of northern currents, this island’s ecosystems are quite different from others. Boasting the most seabird diversity, you will find frigate birds, red-footed and masked boobies, gulls, herons, finches, mockingbirds, and the short-eared owl. Good snorkeling is found here, too—along with hammerhead sharks!

Isabela Island:
Discover secluded Tagus Cove, a favorite anchor for pirates and whalers in past centuries. The vegetation includes the unusual Palo Santo trees, white-barked leafless trees that look dead most of the year. See Darwin Crater, filled with saltwater and one of Isabela’s six volcanoes. Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants, sea turtles, marine iguanas, and giant tortoises are a few species that call this island home.

Fernandina Island:
The youngest of islands is home to continuous volcanic activity and recent black lava flows. Considered by many as one of the most pristine islands in the world due to the absence of introduced mammals, Fernandina has a unique environment with the highest density of marine iguanas, sharing their space with sea lions, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hawks, penguins, and the flightless cormorant.

Bartolomé Island:
The most photographed view of islands in the Galápagos is seen here with Pinnacle Rock. A great place for swimming and snorkeling with its schools of tropical and subtropical fish, sea lions, sharks, rays, sea turtles, and Galápagos penguins.

Know Your “Duty”

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

knowb4ugoI have been on several Caribbean cruises throughout the years, so I tend to be a “rebel” and skip things like the lifeboat drill, the port presentations and the final meeting on the last  of the cruise that explains the disembarkation process, customs declaration, etc.

On my last cruise,  I had some down time and decided to sit in on a presentation for an Island we had never visited. After touting the glory of the port we were going to visit, the cruise director then passed out the common list of “approved/recommended” stores.  It is safe to shop at these stores, yes. It is the best pricing, not always. It really depends on what you are purchasing. If it is jewelry or something you may need to return, then yes by all means use these stores only, but for souvenirs and liquor, for example, don’t overpay.  Shop around several stores for the items you are interested in.

Now back to my story…the cruise director had recommended a duty free liquor store and stated in the meeting that we could purchase as many liters as we wanted and pay no duty. Next day, walking around town we found one of the “anointed” liquor stores. Thinking of all the money we could save, we bought 10 liters of Tortuga Rum, which can only be found on certain islands. The store even arranged to have everything delivered to the ship for us at no charge.

All went well, until we got to customs. We were pulled out of line and taken to a desk where 3 uniformed men were seated. Had my husband tried to sneak in those Cuban cigars after all? After several moments of silence and dirty looks between my husband & I, we were advised that we owed “duty,” because we had purchased in excess of our allowance of liquor. My husband then blamed me of course, because I was the one that attend the meeting. Long story short, we paid our tax of $20, which would have paid for an additional 1.5 bottles of rum.

Make sure and check online for the allowance for each place you are visiting ahead of time, as it is clear that the ship employees do not always have your best interest in mind, or just may not be aware of all the facts. You can easily find the information on each island’s tourist board website.

Here is some general information for the Caribbean:

The duty-free exemption, also called the personal exemption, is the total value of merchandise you may bring back to the United States without having to pay duty. You may bring back more than your exemption, but you will have to pay duty on it. In most cases, the personal exemption is $800, but there are some exceptions to this rule, which are explained below.

Exemptions

Depending on the countries you have visited, your personal exemption will be $200, $800, or $1,600. There are limits on the amount of alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products you may include in your duty-free personal exemption. The differences are explained in the following section.

The duty-free exemptions ($200, $800, or $1,600) apply if:

  • The items are for your personal or household use or intended to be given as gifts.
  • They are in your possession, that is, they accompany you when you return to the United States. Items to be sent later may not be included in your $800 duty-free exemption. (Exceptions apply for goods sent from Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands.)
  • They are declared to CBP. If you do not declare something that should have been declared, you risk forfeiting it. If in doubt, declare it.
  • You are returning from an overseas stay of at least 48 hours. For example, if you leave the United States at 1:30 p.m. on June 1, you would complete the 48-hour period at 1:30 p.m. on June 3. This time limit does not apply if you are returning from Mexico or from the U.S. Virgin Islands. (See also the section on the $200 exemption.)
  • You have not used all of your exemption allowance, or used any part of it, in the past 30 days—for example, if you go to England and bring back $150 worth of items—you must wait another 30 days before you are allowed another $800 exemption. (See the section on the $200 exemption.)
  • The items are not prohibited or restricted as discussed in the section on Prohibited and Restricted Items. Note the embargo prohibitions on products of Cuba.

Joint Declaration

Family members who live in the same home and return together to the United States may combine their personal exemptions. This is called a joint declaration. For example, if Mr. and Mrs. Smith travel overseas and Mrs. Smith brings home a $1,000 piece of glassware, and Mr. Smith buys $600 worth of clothing, they can combine their individual $800 exemptions on a joint declaration and not have to pay duty.

Children and infants are allowed the same exemption as adults, except for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products.
