Several months ago Atlas reported that we felt that 2009 was going to be a great travel year because the deals would be too good to pass up! One of the topics we discussed was that airfare prices would be dropping in the 1st quarter.
Sure enough, in February several tour companies began offering airfare up to 65% off. We also found severl other great deals including American Airlines fares as low as $75 pp each way to Mexico, and $196 each way to England.
On March 1st, the Wall Street Journal published an article regarding airlines slashing fares. According to the article, airfares for the 100 most popular domestic and international routes have dropped to 24 month lows.
This drop in pricing, as well as excellent promotions with cruise and tour companies, have made the difference. We have seen an increase in bookings in the past 30 days. It would seem that people are tired of hearing bad news and want to get away from the stress. With travel companies offering such low rates, client are traveling. The pattern does show bookings closer to departure date, an average of 60 to 90 days prior to travel, rathern than 6 to 9 months as in years prior, but the good news is people are traveling!
