National Park Vacations on the Rise

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Considered “America’s best idea,” National Parks around the world provide travelers preserved views of natural wonder as far as the eye can see.   An American invention, they give us a unique backyard vacation oasis where postcard views meet real, life-altering experiences.  And, it’s this transparent beauty, exploration and enrichment combined with the accessibility of North American National Parks that make them a popular vacation choice.

According to the National Park Service, trips to National Parks are on the rise.  “National Parks are idyllic vacation ‘hot spots’ perfect for relaxation and introspection, wild life exploration or adventure, depending on the traveler,” said Scott Nisbet, president and CEO for the Globus family of brands.

A wide range of experiences can be had at National Parks including everything from snorkeling, rafting and hiking to learning about the environment, geology and wild life.  They also provide a perfect retreat for those hoping to reconnect with themselves or nature.

“Our National Park-focused tours offer an inclusive-style of travel with incomparable exploration and enrichment opportunities,” said Nisbet.  “With a wide range of National Park destinations, hotels and price points, coupled with unparalleled service and storytelling, we create experiences for travelers they couldn’t produce on their own.”

Together, Globus, Cosmos and Monograms offer travelers more than 35 National Park-focused tours and packaged vacations from which to choose an ideal getaway. The most popular National Park-focused escapes for 2010 are:

What’s New for Disney in 2010?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

“Give a Day, Get a Disney Day”    Earlier this year, Disney Parks  launched a program that celebrates the spirit of volunteer service with a simple proposition: “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day.” Disney hopes to inspire families to volunteer in their communities through this first-of-its-kind program. One million people who perform volunteer service for a participating organization in 2010 will receive a free one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park.  Guests can learn more about the program and how to get their free one-day admission ticket by visiting www.DisneyParks.com   To enable people to sign up for an eligible volunteer project, Disney is working with HandsOn Network, the nation’s largest volunteer network. Part of Points of Light Institute, HandsOn Network has 250 on-the-ground volunteer action centers across the country and connects volunteers to more than 70,000 nonprofit agencies that need their help.

Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex will be “re-themed” with the ESPN brand, providing guests with an immersive ESPN experience that will be unique to the complex.

New dining experiences are underway for Epcot.  In Italy, an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria will open in the fall.   The casual pizzeria will feature wood-burning ovens – and use water from a source that most resembles the water in Naples, Italy, home of some of the world’s best pizza dough. In Mexico, the popular Cantina de San Angel is expending to offer 400 seats al fresco for lunch.

A luxury pet resort will open later this year offering doggy day camp, nature walks and playgroups, as well as pampering services for pets while you enjoy the parks.  The hotel will be operated by Best Friends Pet Care.

Magic Kingdom Fantasyland Expansion to be completed by 2012:  The largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom will vastly increase the size of Fantasyland. Guests will be able to:

·   Visit a Disney princess in her castle, cottage or chateau to share a dance with Cinderella; celebrate Sleeping Beauty’s birthday with the Good Fairies; or join Belle in an enchanting story performance in the Beast’s castle library.
·   “Be Our Guest” and dine in one of three enchanted rooms inside the Beast’s castle.
·   Fly with Dumbo high above brand new circus grounds, twice the size of the existing attraction with a new interactive, three-ring circus tent.
·   Journey under the sea with Ariel, the Little Mermaid, in her very own attraction.

Four Seasons to Anchor New Disney Luxury Resort
(date to be announced) – Also announced as part of the Walt Disney World expansion for the next decade: a 900-acre luxury resort anchored by the prestigious Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. The development, along the northeast border of the property, will include a luxury hotel, 18-hole championship golf course, single- and multi-family vacation homes and fractional ownership vacation homes.

Disney Hotel Hawaii: Have You Heard?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Disney is expanding their resort operations to Hawaii with a new hotel currently under construction.  The first section is expected to open in the fall of 2011. Disney has announced the name of the hotel will be Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina having selected a Hawaiian name to show their commitment to honoring Hawaiian culture and traditions throughout the resort.

Disney Hawaii

The property will sit on 21 acres of oceanfront land in the Ko Olina Resort and Marina development, about 30 minutes from Waikiki. Ko Olina was a sacred place of renewal for Kamehameha the Great and his wife, Ka`ahumanu. Known for its sandy beaches, majestic seascapes and snorkeling, Ko Olina is home to many islanders who make their living from the rich agricultural tradition and fishing in the area.

The 360 hotel rooms and 481 time-share villas will include an 18,000 square foot spa, 2 restaurants, kids’ club, designated area for meetings and banquets, as well as a wedding lawn.

Disney is, of course, synonymous with family entertainment. We don’t have all the details at this time, but we know the children’s programs will engage children in fun-filled Hawaiian-themed activities like creating crafts from local materials and interacting with touch tables that will offer children a more in depth look into Hawaii. There will be several pools, waterslides, a sparkling inland saltwater lagoon for snorkeling, and a river running through a specially designed volcanic outcropping for tubing. The resort is sure to have extra touches that will make this resort uniquely Disney.

I find this resort to be an interesting move, as Disney recently dropped their Hawaii tours from their Adventures by Disney family tour product. There’s also a lot of competition in Hawaii with upscale resorts that offer family programs, and Disney is usually quite expensive. Will travelers be willing to spend more to stay at a Disney resort? Time will tell.
