An article published on February 5, 2009 by Rick Steves gave some excellent information on changes for tourists who plan to visit Italy in 2009. Below are just a few of the attractions he mentions in his article.
Rome: Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel will now offer longer hours, open 8:30 to 5:30 p.m. on most days. This should help alleviate the lines. Keep in mind when you travel with a tour group, there are much shorter wait time so you can make more of each day in Italy. The Forum is no longer free. Tourist can take a new “Rome from the Sky” elevator to the rooftop of the Victor Emmanuel Monument.
Florence: You can prebook tickets for the Uffii Gallery and Accademia online.
Venice: Water taxi tickets now cost around $10. The only way to visit the Doge Palace is by purchasing a museum pass. You can no longer feed the pigeons in St. Mark’s Square.
