Hawaii New Remote Work Program Includes Free Airfare

The State of Hawaii launched a new remote work program aimed at former Hawaii residents and out-of-state residents who want to work remotely from the islands. The program, called “Movers and Shakas,” incorporates a “give and get” approach seeking those who are passionate about the values of Hawaii and who have skills to contribute to the local community.

Remote workers interested in joining the program will fill out an application online by December 15, 2020. Fifty applicants will be chosen who meet the qualifications. They will receive a round-trip ticket to Oahu. Subsequent applicants will be accepted to the program on a rolling basis.

The program was launched through a partnership with the Hawaii state government, business leaders, alumni associations at schools and colleges and founding organizations These partners developed “Movers and Shakas” to provide relief to Hawaii’s tourism industry, while also creating a way to increase knowledge resources by connecting local and out-of-state professionals.

The program should attract former Hawaii residents and professionals seeking a safe, warm environment to continue living their normal lives while contributing to the Hawaii community.

Applicants take a “Pledge to our Keiki” making a commitment to respect the culture and natural resources of Hawaii during their stay. The program also includes a skill match component where participants commit several hours a week to a Hawaii nonprofit.

In return for their volunteer work, program participants receive exclusive discounts on month-to-month accommodations, flights, restaurants, and attractions. They also have networking opportunities with Hawaii business professionals and other program participants. Some of the participating hotels include Alohilani Resort, Outrigger Hotels & Prince Hotels. Hawaii currently has the lowest rate per capita of COVID infections in the country, also making it one of the safest places to live and work.
