Step Back in Time

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Linger in the Wonders of the world’s most incredible ancient history…Egypt, Irael & Jordan.

Step back in time to visit Pharaohs and pyramids, King Tut and temples, mummies and monuments.  The banks of the River Nile and the shores of the Red Sea unveil themselves to you as an unparallel panoply of ancient, historical and natural treasures. Tread in the footsteps of the Nabateans as you enter the Siq toward Petra.   Try a sunrise climb to the top of Mt Sinai or hike to Jordan’s secluded Monastery.  Pay homage to the ancient religions of Old Jerusalem and explore the fabled Galilee.

Unforgettable Egypt Tour and Nile Cruise

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Egypt is getting to be one of our most popular destinations. Even though tours to Egypt are offered year round, Cairo can be very hot during the summer months.  I was there in September/October and it was quite hot in the sun (up to 105 degrees during the afternoons), but tolerable in the shade. Light, comfortable clothing is recommended with good walking shoes. We walked for miles in and out of stuffy tombs, but well worth every minute. Valley of the Kings was a highlight. And not to be missed, the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx! The Mena House Hotel overlooks the pyramids. They were within full view from the terrace of our room.

The safety of tourists is a main concern of the Egyptian authorities. It is mandatory for each tour group to proceed throughout Egypt with an armed security guard along on the motor coaches and visiting the attractions. An Egyptologist is assigned to each group and travels with the group from attraction to attraction. They are so knowledgeable and many of them have participated in digs before becoming licensed Egyptologists.

The Nile River Cruise was a highlight of our trip. The river boats are luxurious, with comfortable cabins and serving gourmet food. I was so pampered, I felt like Cleopatra floating down the Nile. Not only are the river boats luxurious, but most of the hotels are, as well.

Every attraction we went to was awesome. The Egyptian Museum is huge. There are 120,000 items on display and more in storage, not yet restored. It is so amazing when you realize you are looking at things thousands of years old. The temples are overwhelming and once again you wonder how they could possibly build these structures thousands of years ago with the primitive tools they had to work with. Abu Simbel is the southernmost spot on the tour. These cliff-built temples were moved stone by stone to higher ground as the project to erect the Aswan Dam would submerge them under Lake Nasser. Depending on which tour you decide on, if Abu Simbel is offered as an option, it is a must see.

You should choose one Light and Sound Show. The one offered at Luxor Temple, right in the heart of the city is the best with it’s great views.

Karnak Egypt

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Karnak Temple is a site of paramount importance. It was built over a span of 2,000 years, with some thirty pharaohs adding buildings, statues and monuments. Much of the site was dedicated to the worship of Amon-Ra, who by the time of the 18th Dynasty, around 1,500 BC, had become Egypt’s chief god.

There is much to see. You enter via the Avenue of Ram-Headed Sphinxes. The Great Hypostyle Hall has 134 columns and covers some 54,000 sq. ft. There are giant obelisks, great pylons, courtyards, magnificent statues and a sacred lake. The experience of visiting is a powerful one.

Aswan Egypt

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Aswan is a city on the first cataract of the Nile in Egypt. Two dams straddle the river at this point: the newer Aswan High Dam, and the older Aswan Dam or Aswan Low Dam. Before impoundment the Nile River would flood each year during summer, as waters from East Africa flowed down the river. These floods brought nutrients and minerals that made the soil around the Nile fertile and ideal for farming. As the population along the river grew, there came a need to control the flood waters to protect farmland and cotton fields. In a high-water year, the whole crop may be entirely wiped out, while in a low-water year there was widespread drought and famine. The aim of this water project was to prevent the river’s flooding, generate electricity and provide water for agriculture.

The British began construction of the first dam in 1899. Construction lasted until 1902. It was opened in December 10, 1902. The initial design was soon found to be inadequate and the height of the dam was raised in two phases, 1907–1912 and 1929–1933.  The High Dam, as-Sad al-’Aali, was completed on July 21, 1970, with the first stage finished in 1964. The reservoir began filling in 1964 while the dam was still under construction and first reached capacity in 1976. The reservoir raised concerns from archaeologists and a rescue operation was begun in 1960 under UNESCO.   Sites were surveyed and excavated and 24 major monuments were moved to safer locations (see Abu Simbel) or granted to countries that helped with the works (such as the Debod temple in Madrid and the Temple of Dendur in New York).

Luxor Egypt Highlights

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Luxor is a city in Upper Egypt and the capital of the Al Uqsur governorate. As the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor has frequently been characterised as the “world’s greatest open air museum,” the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor standing within the modern city. Immediately opposite, across the Nile River, lie the monuments, temples, and tombs on the West Bank Necropolis, which include the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. Thousands of international tourists arrive each year to visit these monuments, their presence forming a large part of the economic basis for the modern city. As a result, Luxor represents an excellent base for touring Upper Egypt, and is a popular holiday destination, both in its own right and as a starting or finishing point for Nile cruises.

Eastern Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf Vacations

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

dubaiThe eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea have seen the beginning of human history, the emergence of great religions, and the rise and fall of civilizations. Now you can see the place with religious history, where the ancient kings lived and died, and where words and ideas have changed the direction of humanity.

Egypt’s Valley of the Kings has hosted the world’s most spectacular pyramids for 5 millennia, while the country around them has transformed into a modern center for entertainment, activities and culture. Choose from land tours or those that include a journey along the Nile.

Israel is a popular tourist destination in the Mediterranean for its multitude of religious and historical sites, its many luxurious resorts, the modern culture and nightlife of Tel Aviv, the healing spas of the Dead Sea and Eilat, and unique natural surroundings throughout.

Nearby Jordan offers a variety of attractions for travelers seeking something slightly different — an unspoiled land of desert beauty dotted with cities both modern and ancient.

Dubai is a modern city that rises out of the desert like an oasis of glass and steel and total luxury. As one of the world’s fastest growing cities, Dubai has emerged as a premier luxury travel destination, drawing visitors from all over the globe. Its dry and sunny weather, incredible shopping experiences, and unique tourist attractions have helped to turn it into a bona fide hot spot where ancient and modern cultures come together. Tour operators have just started offering vacations to Dubai, but the cruise lines all realized early on that Dubai is a thriving city and have added it as a port of call on several itineraries. Royal Caribbean took things one step further, and from January to April 2010, the Brilliance of the Seas will sail out of Dubai with an overnight stay allowing passengers to to enjoy the city. Ports of call will include Muscat, Oman, Fujairah, Abu Dhabi and Mina Sulman, Bahrain.

The Eastern Mediterranean region offers a wealth of sites and cities of interest unmatched anywhere in the world. Explore the past and the present on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to this mystical place.

star1When traveling in the region make sure to wear light colors and fabrics such as linens to reflect sunlight and keep cool. During the days the desert climate can be very warm and dry, while nights are often cool and breezy.
