The Today Show was on location in Rome yesterday with a focus on the Vatican. Popular TV host Matt Lauer had the unique opportunity to personally meet Pope Benedict XVI. The Pope is said to be a big fan of cats, so Matt Lauer presented him with a crystal cat as a gift for taking the time to speak to him. When asked by Lauer if he has a message for Americans, the Pope said, “Confidence in God and continue in the faith of Christ.”
If you are planning an Italy tour or Rome vacation and are interested in an Audience with the Pope, it occurs on most Wednesdays if the Pope is in Rome around 10:30 a.m. Visitors can see the Pope and receive the Papal Blessing during their visit. The Pope does his greeting in 7 different languages and the Our Father prayer in Latin. You can arrive as early as 8 a.m. to get a good seat, but there is also plenty of standing room throughout St. Peter’s Square. Tickets are free but we do suggest picking them up the day before from the Swiss Guards at the Bronze Doors in St. Peter’s Basilica.
Tip: In the summer months Rome can be quite hot, so make sure and have a hat, sunscreen and a bottle of water.
