1329

If you’re planning to take a vacation to Greece, you’re probably already aware that it’s a lovely country full of beautiful scenery, history and culture. No matter how long you plan to spend in this Mediterranean country, you will not find yourself short of places to visit and things to see and do. There is truly no end to the list of fascinating and historic attractions that this country has to offer its visitors. Since your time is likely to be limited, however, here are some must see things to see in Greece:

  • The Acropolis and the Parthenon.

If you only have time to visit one city in Greece, let it be Athens. This picturesque city is the home of the Acropolis, an ancient citadel that is home to the world-famous Parthenon. The high, rocky hill of the Acropolis offers a view of Athens that must be seen to be believed; it would be worth visiting even if there were no Parthenon. The Parthenon, ruins of an ancient temple to Athena, the patron goddess of the city of Athens, is a world famous and historically significant site that you are sure to find awe-inspiring.

  • Delphi.

In ancient times, Delphi was believed to be the center of the world. There are some amazing ruins here to explore, as well as the Delphi museum, which boasts some famous Archaic statuary. Of particular interest is the history of the Delphic Oracle. The Oracle of Delphi was, to put it simply, a young girl who was chosen to be the Oracle, and whose words would be interpreted by priests as messages from the Greek god, Apollo. Ancients Greeks would consult the Oracle on matters ranging from war, to financial concerns, to matters of the heart. In Delphi, you’ll have a unique opportunity to learn more about this interesting piece of Greek history.

  • Olympia.

Home of the first ever Olympic games in the year 776 B.C., Olympia has a fascinating history. The Olympic games were held there every four years until they were abolished in 394 A.D. Olympia is home to the temple of Zeus, which once held a giant statue, made of gold and ivory, that, although it has been lost, is still considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Visitors can run a race at the original Olympic Stadium, located on the east side of Olympia.

These are just a tiny sample of the many exciting attractions and historical sites that Greece has to offer. If you have the time, you’ll also want to check out places like the island of Hydra, or the Mellissani cave. It’s a guarantee that wherever you go in this historic and captivating country, you’ll find sights and places that will delight and intrigue you.
