If you’re planning on traveling in the Midwestern United States later this month, you’ll definitely want to take in a state fair. State fairs have grown from simple agricultural exhibitions to major events that define part of the American experience. They’re a great destination for family fun, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Of the top eight state fairs across the U.S., half of them are located in Midwestern states. This is an area of the country that really knows how to put on a festival! Here are some highlights of these magnificent state fairs.
- Illinois State Fair. The Illinois state fair started in 1853, and today is the 13th largest in the United States. Illinois attracts over 800,000 fairgoers each year. The ten-day event focuses on the traditional agricultural aspect of U.S. state fairs, but also features rides, attractions and well known entertainers. This year’s fair, which starts August 10, includes a wine tasting event, an Ethnic Village boasting food and entertainment from around the globe, and grandstand appearances by the Charlie Daniels Band, Creed, Theory of a Dead Man and many more.
- Indiana State Fair. The Indiana State Fair focuses on agriculture, youth, education and entertainment. This state fair has a long history of famous appearances, such as the Beatles, the Jackson 5, Elvis Presley, John F. Kennedy, and George W/ Bush, to name just a few. This year, the 16-day fair, which goes on until August 19, includes a daily parade, a car show, a cheerleading competition, a Great American Wild West Show, and much more.
- Iowa State Fair. The Iowa state fair was listed in the New York Times’ “1000 Places to See Before You Die” as one of the world’s must-see events. It attracts more than a million attendees a year. It boasts one of the world’s largest livestock shows, and America’s largest state fair foods departments. This year’s ten-day event, running from August 9 through the 19th, will have grandstand appearances by Larry the Cable Guy, Hank Williams Jr., Rascal Flatts and Journey.
- Minnesota State Fair. The Minnesota state fair is an annual event that draws two million visitors annually. The fairgrounds themselves are home to historic structures such as the Arts Center, the Progress Center, the Grandstand and the Coliseum. This year’s fair, which occurs August 23 to September 3, will feature livestock competitions, a 5k race, and a talent contest. Bonnie Raitt, Alan Jackson, KISS, and Motley Crue will all be making grandstand appearances, along with many other well known acts. There will be several new attractions this year, such as a laser show, a giant sandbox, and several new midway rides.
