The beautiful San Antonio River Walk, located in San Antonio, Texas, is much more than just another local public park. This park, made up of walkways along the San Antonio River connects several of the major tourist draws in the area and is itself a popular and attractive destination for tourists to visit. The River Walk is flanked by many shops, restaurants and bars. Walking along the River Walk, you can find your way to the Alamo, the Arneson River Theater, Rivercenter Mall, La Villita, the Pearl Brewery, and the San Antonio Museum of Art. Additionally, many exciting local events take place along the River Walk. The San Antonio River Walk is host to over 20 events each year. Here is a rundown of a few of the upcoming events taking place along the River Walk.

  • El Dia de los Muertos. Also known as The Day of the Dead, this tradition that comes from the Mexican culture is widely celebrated in the town of San Antonio. On November 2nd, local museums, cultural centers and art galleries will set up ofrendas, shrines similar to altars honoring departed loved ones. Processions will take place in the streets and sidewalks, made up of people in elaborate skeleton costumes meant to represent the deceased. Despite appearances, this is not at all a dark or morbid holiday; it is instead a celebration of family and of the continuity of life and the family ties that extend beyond the grave. The celebration is city wide. Along the River Walk, La Villita and the San Antonio Museum of Art are great places to visit and take part in the festivities.
  • Wurstfest. This event, beginning November 2nd and continuing up through November 11th, is another entertaining and enjoyable salute to German culture. This festival offers games and rides, an assortment of excellent German food, a polka contest, performances by bands and orchestras and even yodelers and much more. There’s even a clown. Admission is free for children 12 and under. Tickets for all day admission are $8.00 at the gate or $6.00 if ordered in advance.
  • Ford Holiday River Parade & Lighting Ceremony:  This parade has run for more then 30 years and includes illuminated floats with celebrities, live music and lavish costumes.  This year’s parade is on November 23rd from 7 to 10 p.m.

These are just some of the activities occurring at or near River Walk in the next few months, but the River Walk is busy and full of things to do year round. If you’re going to be in San Antonio at any time of year, this is an area you want to visit.
