Savannah, Georgia, is a popular city to visit for many reasons. It’s beautiful, historic and a rich cultural center. And, of course, it’s haunted. Savannah is actually known as the most haunted city in America. Perhaps the designation stems from its history as a battleground area during both the Revolutionary and the Civil wars, or perhaps it’s that the city, over the centuries, has been home to pirates and voodooists, among others notorious types. In any case, the city is well-known for having an abundance of undead citizens. Visitors looking for an unusual way to learn about Savannah’s history, or those who just want to see some spooks, would do well to choose one of the numerous ghost tours offered throughout the city for some interesting information and spine-tingling fun. Here are a few of the top ghost tours offered in the city of Savannah.
- Hearse Ghost Tours. This tour, probably not one for the easily frightened, loads passengers into the back of a real hearse for their one-and-a-half-hour tour. Tour-goers are accompanied by a guide as they ride around the city visiting fabulous historic homes and forbidding old cemeteries. Along the way, you’ll learn some of the darker histories behind the notable homes and the stories of the fallen people who reside in the cemeteries. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll spot one of the ghosts responsible for the haunting that you’ll be hearing about.
- Ghosts and Gravestones. This is a trolley tour, and its claim to fame is that its tour goers get special night time entry into two of the most notorious haunted locations in Savannah. The first of these locations, the Gribble house, was the scene of a triple murder in 1909. Paranormal groups have reported orbs, ghostly voice recordings, and strong electronic pulse readings at this location. The second location is Perkin’s & Son’s Ship Chandlery, is considered by some to be the epicenter of Savannah’s paranormal activity. Entry to both of these locations is said to be limited to Ghosts and Gravestones tour participants, so take this tour if you’re looking for an exclusive experience.
- Ghost City Tours. This tour company offers three main tours. They have the nightly 90 minute Grave Tales of Savannah tour, which offers the best ghost stories that the city has to offer. Then there is Beyond Good and Evil tour, which takes place on Tuesday through Saturday nights which explores the origins of the haunting of Savannah. Finally there is the Dead of Night, held every night except Thursdays, which changes frequently but always explores the darkest stories of Savannah’s dark side.
