Do you love musicals? If you are planning to visit New York this winter, you may want to plan on seeing a show on Broadway. It goes without saying that a Broadway show is an experience that everyone should try at least once! Here are some of the Broadway shows that will be playing over the next few weeks or months:
- Cinderella This is a new twist on an old favorite: This time, Cinderella, far from being the damsel in distress, is actually the one to save Prince Charming! The show doesn’t open until March, but previews will begin at the end of January at the Broadway Theatre, between West 52nd and 53rd Streets. Tickets cost between $45 and $137.
- Matilda the Musical If you have children, you may have seen Matilda, the movie about a spunky and very smart little girl who has to contend with her less-than-stellar parents and scary headmistress. This show starts previewing in March, and opens in April 2013. It’s on my list of musicals to see on the big stage! It’s playing at the Shubert on W. 44th, and ticket prices haven’t yet been announced.
- Evita Watch this moving story of the First Lady of Argentina’s journey from her disadvantaged youth through her rise to the top. Evita closes at the end of January, so if you’d like to see this show, book tickets as soon as possible. It’s playing at the Marquis Theater, on Broadway between 45th and 46th Streets, and ticket prices range from $75 to $150.
- Jersey Boys The story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons has been playing since 2005, but the show is scheduled to close in April of 2013, so your chances to see it are coming to an end soon. This show isn’t to be missed if you are a fan of this quintessential pop band, as it features several of their hits. It will be playing at the August Wilson Theater on W. 52nd Street, and tickets cost between $47 and $147.
- Wicked My all-time favorite musical, Wicked, is playing on Broadway at the George Gershwin Theater until September 2013. Wicked is the story that takes place before The Wizard of Oz. Find out how Glinda the Good Witch, the Wicked Witch of the East and the Wicked Witch of the West came to be, and question your thoughts and assumptions about good and evil.
- Annie Everyone’s favorite red-haired orphan is the start of this classic, in which Annie and Daddy Warbucks forge the father-daughter relationship that they’ve both been looking for. It will be playing until March at the Palace Theater, on the corner of 7th Avenue and 47th Street. There are matinee and evening performances, and ticket prices range from $67.50 to $137.50.
- The Lion King The Lion King is another long-running show that’s scheduled to close this year, in the summer of 2013. A great show to see with the family, this musical tells the tale of young Simba as he grows from cub to king of the jungle. The show is playing at Minskoff Theater on W. 42nd Street, and tickets cost from $87 to $172.
If you like the theater and are planning to be in The Big Apple soon, try to see a Broadway show. They’re a real treat, and totally worth the investment.
