Places to Visit: Vancouver, British Columbia

1117

Vancouver, in British Columbia, Canada, is situated on the Strait of Georgia but also very close to the North Shore Mountains. It’s a popular vacation destination for those who want the option to ski or go to the beach during the same long weekend. Also, it’s under three hours away by car from Seattle if you are in the area and want to drive up; just be sure that you have a passport, as you’ll need it to get back into the United States after your visit! While you are in Vancouver, here are some things to see and do:

  • Climb Grouse Mountain. Not your typical hike, the way up the mountain mostly consists of steep wooden steps. This is considered a very strenuous hike/climb, and is not for the faint of heart (or leg muscle)! It’s open from May to October, but certain weather conditions might shut it down. If you don’t think that you can manage the climb, or if it’s closed when you visit, no worries: You can take a skyride on a big gondola for about $33 per person. In ten minutes, you’ll be at the summit, where you’ll be able to get into an IMAX theater as well as a wildlife refuge with your ticket. There’s also an ice rink, snowboarding, snowshoeing and various other attractions.
  • Go shopping. Vancouver offers several shopping districts. The most popular is Granville Island, which, while not technically an island, offers a relaxed island atmosphere. Shop for fresh fruits and vegetables at the huge produce market, find unique home decor items at the art shops, visit the theater, and stop for food and beverages at one of the area’s restaurants or breweries. Other interesting shopping areas include Vancouver’s Chinatown and Vancouver’s Punjabi Market. If you’re into trendy boutiques, try the fashion district on South Main, particularly the section between 19th and 23rd Avenues. International wares and other upscale items are available on Robson Street, another great shopping area.
  • Go to the beach. Vancouver offers several beaches that cater to those with various preferences. Kitsilano, or Kits, Beach, is your typical bronze-bodies-glistening-in-the-sun summertime gathering spot. Jericho Beach is great for sporty individuals or families; whether your sport of choice is beach volleyball, sailing or windsurfing, Jericho Beach has it all. Sunset Beach, which is only a 30-minute walk from downtown, has a lifeguard and a floating slide, making it particularly appealing to families. Finally, Wreck Beach is Canada’s only nudist beach, so if you’re looking for a place to bare it all, that’s the place to be!

Whether you’re hoping for a busy nightlife, the charms of a quaint island within the city, outdoor adventure, or lounging in the sun once summer comes, Vancouver, British Columbia, has something for everyone.
