If you haven’t ever been out of the country, traveling to Canada is seen by many as a great way to get your feet wet, figuratively speaking. Also, because our northern neighbors are so close to the northern States, it’s relatively inexpensive to visit when compared with other international vacation destinations. While there are many areas of Canada that would be wonderful to visit, the eastern province of New Brunswick, Canada, in particular is great for those living in New England who might not want to travel long distances, as well as those interested in immersing themselves in the natural surroundings of a province that includes both mountains and Atlantic beaches. Here are some ways to explore the nature of New Brunswick.

  • Provincial Parks  New Brunswick is home to eight provincial parks, each of which is different in its own way. Enjoy salt water beaches at Murray Beach and Parlee Beach Provincial Parks. The highest peak in the Maritime is home to Mount Carleton Provincial Park, and the banks of the Madawaska River is where you’ll find de la Republique Provincial Park. The others are Herring Cove, Mactaquac, New River Beach and Sugarloaf Provincial Parks. Most of the parks offer hiking trails and wildlife viewing; some have bicycle trails, canoeing, kayaking and a host of other outdoor activities.

  • Wildlife  New Brunswick, Canada, is home to a great variety of wildlife, from marine animals to those living in the forests. Just venturing into the great outdoors in any of the natural areas can let you meet some of these animals, but there are also areas that are specifically designed to let visitors get more up close and personal than they would in the wild. Birding excursions can let you see blue herons or even Atlantic puffins. Whale-watching opportunities are plentiful, and you’ll see not only these gentle giants, but also seals and other ocean life. Finally, there are nature reserves where you can see deer, moose, butterflies and other creatures who call the Canadian province home.

  • Beaches  Aside from the beaches at the provincial parks, New Brunswick also offers other beaches, some of which are known for giving great glimpses into the natural world of eastern Canada. Cape Jourimain Beach, for example, offers stunning views, and it only gets better when the tide goes out. That’s when you’ll have the opportunity to see hermit crabs, starfish, ospreys, and a host of other wildlife. Hunt for fossils and enjoy seeing porpoises and other wildlife from the rocky shores of Cape Enrage Beach. There’s even a bird observatory where you can see a wide variety of birds as well as seals.

If you’re a nature-lover, visiting New Brunswick, Canada will give you the chance of a lifetime to see amazing wildlife up close. You’ll also marvel at the mountain and marine views. Don’t forget your camera, as you’ll want to document your trip and enjoy the photos for years to come!
