Healthy Eating on Vacation: Walt Disney World

2393

Healthy eating can be hard work. It takes time and attention to detail to find or prepare healthy meals for yourself and your family, and the last thing that you want to do is completely blow your nutritious eating habits just because you’re on vacation. Luckily, Walt Disney World makes it easy to make nutritious, healthy choices while visiting their parks and resorts. If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World in the near future, be sure to keep the following healthful dining options in mind.

  • Magic Kingdom  While you’re in Tomorrowland, stop in and eat at the Cosmic Rays Starlight Cafe. They serve vegetable sandwiches and veggie burgers, and you can substitute apple slices for French fries. Visit Columbia Harbor House in Liberty Square for grilled salmon with a side of steamed broccoli, a white tuna sandwich, or a Garden Harvest Salad with chicken. One more place to try in the Magic Kingdom is the Crystal Palace, where you can enjoy a shrimp, mango, and black bean salad, or a bowl of turkey and vegetable soup.

  • Animal Kingdom  On Discovery Island, head to the Flame Tree Barbecue for a smoked turkey breast sandwich or a seasonal fruit plate with honey yogurt. For a kid’s meal, you can order a baked chicken drumstick with sides like carrot sticks and grapes. Another option is the Yak and Yeti Restaurant in the Asia section. Try the Ahi tuna salad or the seared miso salmon. Finally, check out the Tusker House Restaurant for fare like tandoori tofu or curry chicken.

  • Epcot  At Epcot, eat at Sunshine Seasons, located on the Land Pavilion in Futureland. Visitors to the restaurant recommend the Oak Grilled Vegetable Flatbread Sandwich. Another option is Teppen Edo on the Japan Pavilion, which serves, among other things, a sushi sampler and a chicken dish with vegetables, rice, and udon noodles called Tori. At the Mexican Pavillion, order grilled veggie tacos at La Hacienda de San Angel.

  • Hollywood Studios  At the ABC Commissary at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, skip the fried food and order an Asian salad or the chicken curry. The park’s 50’s Prime Time Cafe offers a spaghetti dish made with multigrain spaghetti and vegetarian meatballs. You can also pick up a grilled veggie sandwich at Backlot Express or sit down for a meal of whole wheat pasta and vegetables at Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano.

  • Downtown Disney Marketplace  If you’re spending the day exploring Downtown Disney, you should stop at Fresh A-Peel for a healthy lunch or snack. Grab a vegetarian burger made from falafel on a multigrain bun, with a side of carrot sticks. Finish off your meal with a serving of probiotic vanilla frozen yogurt.

Even the Disney resorts have healthy choices. For example, the California Grill at Disney’s contemporary resort is known for their nutritious menu, and the Wave also has delicious and healthy fare. At the Walt Disney World, it’s completely possible to enjoy your vacation while enjoying the benefits of healthy eating.
