Spending a Day in Santiago, Chile

1218

Santiago, the capital city of Chile, is cultured, charming, and close to some adventure. While at first glance, Santiago might seem bleak due to the nearly-perpetual smog, underneath it all lies a quirky and fascinating place to spend some time, should you find yourself in this South American country. If you only have a day or a weekend to spend in Santiago, Chile, here are some places of interest that you should not miss:

The Markets

If you want to feel the rhythm of the city of Santiago, you would be wise to visit the markets. This is where you can get the freshest food and mingle with the locals. It will seem loud, busy, and possibly intimidating to you, but the markets are colorful, delicious and teeming with the culture of the city. One of the best is Mercado Central, which was touted in National Geographic as one of the world’s top 10 food markets. Here, you can get fish and seafood in many varieties, some of which are only available in Chile. If you’re looking for the freshest produce, you will want to head to La Vega. Are you hoping to find handmade crafts and other souvenirs? If so, don’t miss Pueblito Los Dominicos.

Urbn Stgo

Do you know the difference between street art and graffiti? Urbn Stgo is an open air museum that features true street art. This display is located in a residential area, and features 35 murals that really show the level of community and civic pride in the area. San Miguel, the suburb that is home to Urbn Stgo, is part of an urban revitalization project and the art display has been a big part of that. You can take a tour of the area, and there are workshops and other events available, as well. To get to Urbn Stgo, you will need to go to The Clinic, which is located on Line 5 of Metro Bellas Artes.

Plaza de Armas (Central Square)

Santiago’s center is called Plaza de Armas. Here, you will be able to see sculptures, fountains and, of course, a variety of historic buildings. One of the most striking is Santiago Cathedral, built in 1747. Also, you’ll want to check out the Correo Central, or Central Post Office; Cuartel de Bomberos, which is the city’s oldest fire station; and the Museo Historico Nacional. In addition, you’ll be able to enjoy lunch at one of the cafes in the plaza, and you might also be interested in the vendors selling various crafts and other wares.

Parque Forestal

The Parque Forestal is an urban park set in the heart of Santiago. If you are staying in the center of the city, chances are that you will be able to access the park easily. It also is close to all of the attractions of the city, including Mercado Central. You can let the kids play on the huge playground or simply enjoy a walk amidst the rows and rows of trees. Relax on a park bench and just take some time to watch the joggers and walkers or read a book. This is a great way to spend an hour or two while you gather your energy for more Chilean adventures and sightseeing.

If you are feeling adventurous, perhaps hiking to the top of San Cristóbal Hill is more your style. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands at the top and you will get a spectacular panoramic view of the city and the Andes Mountains on a clear day. It should only take you 30 to 60 minutes on how fast you walk to get to the top.

If you are visiting in September, make sure to catch Chile’s largest celebration Fiestas Patrias of Chile consists of two days, starting on September 18th. It commemorates the Chilean Independence from Spain that started in 1810. Enjoy dancing the cueca, drink a terremoto and enjoy some amazing homemade empanadas.
