After the turkey is eaten and the pumpkin pie is put away, our thoughts turn to something else: Black Friday. Since the 1960s, Americans have enjoyed special sales on the busiest shopping day of the year. In recent years, however, the day has gotten even more frenzied, with stores opening at 4:00 or 5:00 am, or even in the evening hours of Thanksgiving Day itself! If you are hoping to start off in the wee hours to shop ‘til you drop on Black Friday this year, you might consider traveling to an area very conducive to snapping up sales. Here are some of the best Black Friday shopping vacation destinations to consider for 2013:
-
Las Vegas, Nevada The Gambling Capital of the World offers something more than slot machines and poker on Black Friday: Most of the shopping malls in the city will be opening at midnight, and stores such as the dozens of Walmarts, 12 Targets and the Toys R Us and Best Buys will be opening at 8:00 pm on Thursday evening for your shopping pleasure. Your hotel and nearby casinos will also be hosting shopping extravaganzas in their attached malls.
-
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota Where would you go if you wanted to knock yourself out shopping any other day of the year? The Mall of America, of course, and Black Friday is no exception! Many retailers will be opening at midnight, and others will be following suit as daylight approaches later in the morning on Friday. If you don’t want to go to the mall, you can also shop at the numerous Walmarts, Targets and other big box stores in the Twin Cities.
-
Sunrise, Florida Do you want to do your Black Friday outlet shopping while wearing flipflops and capris? If so, check out Sawgrass Mills outlet, located in Sunrise, outside of Fort Lauderdale. You’ll have your pick of 350 stores, so you’re sure to find some great deals for everyone on your Christmas list.
-
Portland, Oregon Not feeling like traipsing through Walmart this year? Consider making the trek to Portland, where you’ll find tons of quirky and cool indie boutiques. Forget about buying the must-have items that are adorning circulars everywhere, and find something unique to give your loved ones in 2013! There’s another reason to shop in Portland on Black Friday, too: There’s no sales tax!
-
San Antonio, Texas Forbes lists San Antonio as the top shopping destination in the country, and for good reason: With nearly 6,000 retail stores and 41 shopping centers, you should definitely be able to find everything on your list. You have indoor malls, outdoor malls and locally owned shops to choose from.
Shopping on Black Friday is a time-honored tradition that follows filling up on turkey and counting our blessings on Thanksgiving.
