Where to Go for a White Christmas

1304

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Depending on where you live, this might be a yearly occurrence, an occasional treat, or so rare that you would be shocked to see snow on the ground on Christmas morning. Having grown up in a place where it never snows, my children love visiting relatives in New England in the winter. Unfortunately, where they live, Santa almost never gets to leave footprints in freshly fallen snow. If you are looking for a vacation destination that is likely to result in a white Christmas, here are some ideas:

  • Caribou, Maine  Way up in Maine, near the Canadian border, there is almost definitely going to be snow on the ground on Christmas. It’s estimated that snow is on the ground 97% of the time on December 25, and more than half the time, there’s ten inches or more! If you want to go snowshoeing or skiing, then Caribou will be a great place for you to spend your winter holiday. Otherwise, there’s always the Northern Maine Museum of Science, the Nylander Museum and the Frenchville Historical Society Museum, all of which will allow you to warm up indoors.

  • Duluth, Minnesota  In this northern Minnesota city, you’re almost guaranteed to have snow on the ground; meteorologists have guesstimated that 97% of the time, there is at least one inch of snow on Christmas morning in Duluth. When you’re not merrymaking, you can take in a glimpse of a bygone era at the Glensheen Estate or find out more about the Great Lakes at the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center.

  • Fairbanks, Alaska  You know that Alaska is snowy, but did you know that many cities really don’t have a high chance of getting now on Christmas? Fairbanks is not one of those cities, however; they have just about 100% chance of having five or more inches of snow on the ground when Santa makes his way down from the North Pole. Anchorage also offers a good chance, at 90% for at least an inch. Juneau’s forecast is hit or miss, with only 62% of Christmases turning out to be white.

If you want to find out where you stand in terms of percentages, you can find your region of the country on this map.
