  • Atlanta, Georgia. If you want to celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., there’s no better place to do it than in Atlanta, Georgia, home of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Atlanta hosts a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr,’s life for ten days, starting on January 10 in 2014 and continuing through January 20, so when you visit Atlanta for your MLK weekend, you won’t have any trouble finding things to see and events to attend. See King’s birth home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was first baptized. He later served as a pastor at the same church, and his funeral was held there as well, so there’s a lot of history in that site. You should also take the time to stop in the National Park Service Visitor Center and take in some films and exhibits about the Civil Rights Movement and King’s important role in it.

  • Orlando, Florida. Want to get away from it all for the day and enjoy some blue skies and sunshine? January may not be warm enough for a visit to one of Florida’s beaches, but it’s a perfect time to take in all the attractions that Orlando has to offer. If you’re traveling with children, you can’t lose in Orlando, when everything from Disney World to nearby Lego Land is available to entertain them. Adults can have a great time in Florida, too, though.
