Top 5 Things You Should Do Before International Travel

In general, a lot more goes into international travel versus domestic travel. In order to be ready to go out of the country, you need to prepare ahead of time. You should do the following things before traveling internationally.

Get Your Documentation Ready
Before traveling overseas you need to make sure that all of your paperwork is in order. Check to make sure your passport isn’t about to expire and renew it if it’s going to expire within 6 months of travel. Photocopy important documents like your driver’s license, the front page of your passport, airline tickets and your health insurance card. Store these items in a separate place than your originals just in case any of your documents get lost or stolen.

Refill Your Medications And Get Vaccinations
Some countries may require that you have certain vaccinations before you are allowed to enter into the country. Before traveling internationally, check to see if there are any vaccination requirements for your destination and take care of them accordingly. Make sure you stock up on any medications that you need while you are overseas. A good rule of thumb is to pack at least an extra week’s worth of medication on top of the amount needed while you will be on vacation. This way, if you experience any flight delays or trip cancellations, you will have enough medication to make it through until you get back home.

Learn Some Key Phrases
If you are traveling to a destination that doesn’t speak your native language it can be hard to get your needs taken care of. Learn some key phrases like “Where’s is the bathroom?” that will make traveling easier. You can also download an app or two on your phone that can translate English to other languages for you.

Buy Travel Insurance
If you are traveling internationally, you need to buy travel insurance. The good thing is that it is usually relatively inexpensive. Most travel insurance policies cover lost or stolen luggage or reimbursement if you have to cancel your travel plans due to illness.

Get Your Finances In Order
When you travel internationally you will probably have to convert your money. Figure out where and when you will get foreign currency. If you plan on using your credit card, find out if there are any foreign transaction fees that you need to be aware of.
