There’s something about seeing a city by plane or even car that can’t be matched to that of a train. Traveling on a train combines some of the comforts of a hotel room with the convenience of getting to a destination quickly. Throughout the world there are many great railway journeys to choose from.

Trans-Mongolian Express
From setting foot in the train station at the Moscow Kazansky to getting on the actual train, the sense of adventure is all around. Stops include:

– Zaudinskiy- The train only stops at this village for a short time. Highlights include its large bread factory and beautiful surroundings.
– Gusinoe Ozero Town- This area is surrounded by mountains and is located along the Selenga River.
SukhBaatar- The train stops here for anywhere from 1.5-3 hours. The town was built back in 1940 and is located on the Orkhnon and Selenga rivers.

Travelers who go on this journey can go from Moscow to Beijing while taking advantage of the all-inclusive amenities on the train.

Eastern And Oriental Express

This journey is fairly short at only 57 miles which equates to 3 ½ hours one way. However, there’s a lot packed into it. Travelers can see a variety of landscapes that include everything from gorges to forests. They are also served a three course lunch while onboard and there’s a three piece band to serenade them. The journey starts at Cusco and ends at Machu Picchu. Many travelers opt to spend the night at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, which is right next to Machu Picchu, so that they will have plenty of time to explore the area.

Westward Ho: California Zephyr
This 2,438 journey travels through seven states. The train takes passengers to many destinations, including:

The Borders Railways, UK
This is the newest railway on our list as the first journey took place in September of this year. There are quite a few itineraries to choose from and destinations include:

This is the longest domestic railway that has been completed in the United Kingdom in more than 100 years. One of the benefits of these railway journeys is that they provide reliable transportation between the south east and the capital that hasn’t been available in the past.
