Summertime is a busy travel season. Some of the most popular places to visit are on a coastline. If you are visiting one of these places, there’s a chance that your destination will get hit by a hurricane. This doesn’t mean that you need to forgo summer travel though! There are some things you can do to be prepared if a hurricane strikes right before or during your vacation.

About Hurricane Season
Hurricane season goes from June 1 through November 30. The peak of the season is from about the middle of August through the end of October. To be considered a tropical storm, winds must be 39-74 miles an hour. To be considered a hurricane, the winds must be 75 miles per hour or greater. Ever year there are predictions made about the number of storms that will occur. However, since they are just predication’s, there’s no way that you can know exactly how active of a storm season it will be. The most hurricanes to ever occur in the Pacific Ocean was 16.

Preparing Ahead Of Time
If you’ve made travel plans in a hurricane prone area, you can do some things to prepare. One of the best things you can do is to get travel insurance. The extra money you spend on it will be worth it if you have to cancel your trip. Before your vacation you should also check to see if there are any disturbances in the area to determine if your trip will likely be cancelled. Find out what the emergency plan is at your destination if there does happen to be a hurricane. Hotels should be able to tell you what they will do if a storm should hit while you are staying there. Cruise lines should have emergency plans as well that generally include changing their course to avoid being stuck in a hurricane. For the most part, destinations that have been hit by a hurricane in the past will have an emergency plan in place.

Many travelers that have been through a hurricane before while on vacation take a travel kit with them. This includes items like flashlights and batteries, first aid kits and even water and food. Even though you can’t really predict if a hurricane is coming, you still can prepare for it. The likelihood of a hurricane interrupting your travel plans is fairly small so you shouldn’t put off your summer vacation for fear that one could hit.
