Philadelphia has a lot of good things to eat. The food scene has exploded over the years and many people visit the city just to eat. Philly has everything from pizza, to burgers to handcrafted beer. One thing you have to try is a sandwich. Philadelphia is known for its ability to make an amazing hoagie, roast pork sandwich and of course, the cheese-steak. Don’t leave Philly without stopping for one of these sandwiches.

Hoagie

What It Is: A hoagie consists of a hoagie roll that is filled with meats, cheeses, vegetables and condiments.

Where To Get One: Sarcone’s Deli has been making hoagies since 1997. They have been baking their own bread for over five generations, which gives their hoagies an advantage over its competitors. One of their most popular sandwiches is the Italian hoagie that consists of hard salami, hot capacola, prosciutto, provolone, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, oil and vinegar.

Roast Pork

What It Is: A roast pork sandwich is fairly simple with hot roast pork and melted cheese on a roll.

Where To Get One: John’s Roast Pork is one of the best places in Philadelphia to get one of these sandwiches. This tiny shack has been open for over 80 years and it’s not uncommon to see a line forming out the door with hungry patrons awaiting their sandwiches. What makes this sandwich so great is that the pork is simmered in its own gravy before it’s placed on a long, crusty roll. A favorite among diners is to order it with provolone cheese and sautéed spinach.

Cheese-steak

What It Is: A cheese steak consists of beefsteak, that is thinly sliced, onions and melted cheese on a hoagie roll.

Where To Get One: If you are in Philadelphia you must stop at Tony Luke’s for a cheese steak. Basically you order your cheese-steak through a window and then can sit at an outdoor picnic table to enjoy it. There’s nothing fancy about this restaurant, but the cheese-steak is phenomenal. A favorite among diners is the cheese-steak topped with Cheese Wiz, or Wiz as it’s known as. One thing that can leave visitors taken aback is the attitude of the employees at Tony Luke’s as they are known to be unfriendly. Don’t worry though, it’s all just an act and they actually take pride in giving patrons a hard time. It’s part of the charm of the restaurant many say.
