Recently Sri Lanka was named Asia’s leading destination at the World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia 2017. It’s not surprising as Sri Lanka has a lot to offer tourists who are looking for an adventure that can include everything from safaris to tours. For those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, there are a variety of beaches to visit as well. There’s something for everyone to enjoy in Sri Lanka.
Ancient Temples
There’s no shortage of ancient temples that can be found in Sri Lanka. To view them, your best bet is to visit either Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa. Both places will allow you to learn a little bit about the history of the area and marvel at some of the magnificent ruins.
Dehiwala Zoo
You’ve probably never experienced a zoo like the Dehiwala Zoo. It generally takes visitors at least 8 hours to see everything. There are a lot of animals to view as well as a butterfly park, snake farm and aquarium. There are also shows that take place throughout the day which include a sea lion show and elephant show. It does get crowded though as 5,000 people can visit the park in one day.
Kithulgala
Looking for an adventure? Go white water rafting down the Kelani River. Fair warning though as it can get rough so this is definitely not for the timid!
Floating Market
Located in Bastian Mawatha, near the Fort Railway Station, the floating market is an experience in and of itself. There are a variety of local products that can be purchased here. There’s also a floating restaurant where tourists can dine at.
Galle Face Terrace
This is a great place to go for those that want to just relax and feel like a local. You will find that many individuals go walking or jogging here in the mornings. In the evenings a lot of people hang out here and grab a bite to eat from a street vendor or fly a kite (there are usually some available to purchase). When the sun rises and sets there is a flag ceremony that’s worth watching.
The Sanctuary
This location makes for an excellent place to see elephants. They are kept in an environment that’s as close to their natural habitat as possible. Visitors can watch the daily activities of the elephants and learn a little bit more as to how they are taken care of.
Bentota Beach
This is one of the most popular beaches in Sri Lanka. It’s know for it’s sea turtle farm and hatchery. There’s also many different water sports to participate in here.
These are just some of the many things to see in Sri Lanka.There’s also boat tours to see both whales and dolphins, rock climbing, treks in the jungle, scuba diving and so much more. It’s not surprising that this area is gaining popularity with tourists!
