With summer fast approaching, many families are already starting to make their summer travel plans. This can include everything from road trips across America to cruises in the Caribbean. No matter where families want to go, there are some tricks and tips in order to have smarter family travel.
Ditch The Hotel And Get A Rental
Long gone are the days to where you have to stay at a hotel when you travel. Many families are ditching the hotel and choosing vacation rentals instead. The nice thing about this option is that you can have a fully stocked kitchen to cook meals. This can save you quite a bit of money on eating out and allow you to be able to prepare something for even the pickiest of eaters. You also have access to things like a washer and dryer, which can be a huge perk for those traveling with kids. This also allows you to make some meals and take them with you when you are going out on excursions. You won’t have to deal with making reservations or having to deal with sometimes incredibly long wait times.
Pack The Right Things
We all know that we need to pack toiletries and clothes while on vacation, but what about other items that make traveling with kids easier? If you find a snack your kids love, pack those items in bulk. This will keep you from having to stop all the time on a road trip and having to pay exorbitant costs on gas station items. Pack toys for your kids. Now, I know what you’re thinking- you don’t want to waste precious luggage space on toys. However, if you simply roll your clothes instead of folding them in order to make space, you will find that you can make room for some toys that will keep your kids entertained whether it be when you are dealing with a flight delay or trying to get onboard your cruise ship. Don’t forget to also pack reusable water bottles. You will find that many destinations have safe water fountains to drink from and fill up your bottles. Not only will you save money by not having to stop and buy drinks all of the time, but you will be reducing waste.
Have The Right Expectations
No matter how well behaved your kids are, travel can be a lot for them to take in. They get out of their routines and leave many of their prized possessions at home. For some kids, this can be a good thing and turn into a big adventure. For other kids however, this can be difficult for them. Make sure you have the right expectations. For instance, don’t expect your 3 year old to sit on a tour for hours without making a peep or having a meltdown or two. In order to prepare for situations that aren’t that pleasant for you and your children, plan for them ahead of time. Research games that you can play with your little one no matter where you are. Download apps for your kids to use that don’t require an internet connection.
To take the stress out of family travel, consider a cruise. There are amazing children’s programs with Royal Caribbean Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line. All of your meals and entertainment are taken care of in one price. Tour companies such as Tauck Bridges and Adventures by Disney also offer family tours so that you can travel with like minded travelers, and the kids will have someone their age sure to be traveling with them.
