During this time of quarantine where traveling can be a bit daunting for many, it’s no reason to not experience the world even if it means not leaving our homes, right? Travel by reading books has been something we as humans have done since, like forever! Whether you’re a Comic Book, SciFi, Fantasy, Mystery or Thriller buff, the idea of reading books is to temporarily escape.
During a quarantine; however, you’ll need a bit more in terms of seeing more, and what better way to accomplish that than to get your hands on publications that are guaranteed to transport you to a whole new world!
- OUTLANDER – What many might not know about the series, is that the first novel in the series was published in 1991 by Diana Gabaldon. As some of us may already know, the series is about a WWII Army Nurse who is transported to 1743 Scotland while on her second honeymoon. The series will transport you to Scotland
- CIRCE -The daughter of Helios and Hecate, Circe is an enchantress in Greek Mythology known best for turning humans into swine in order to force Odysseus to stay on her island in Homer’s Odyssey. The book entitled CIRCE by Madeline Miller is a tell all tale of Circe’s loves and losses throughout Greece.
- FOUR SEASONS IN ROME – Is a 2007 chronicle of being a parent, writer and student while in Rome by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anthony Doerr who recites a bit of Pliny, Dante and Keates.
- A MOVEABLE FEAST – Is an epic tale by Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-Winning author about spending his youth in Paris during the 1920s. Although poor as a married correspondent working for a Toronto-based newspaper (The Star), Paris is where he met some of the most interesting people in history including Gertrude Stein, James Joyce and Ezra Pound.
- TURN RIGHT AT MACHU PICCHU – A 2011 novel by Mark Adams who have you visiting not just Machu Picchu, but the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and everywhere else in between!
- MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD & EVIL – One of my best road trips was to Savannah during the holidays, but what catapulted me was reading John Berendt’s novel, “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil”!
- A Year In The World: Journeys of a Passionate Traveller by Frances Mayes
Mayes is known not only for her book A Year in the World, but Under the Tuscan Sun as well. In this book she departs from Tuscany and visits the British Isles, France, North Africa, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. Her journey is filled with many ups and downs and twists and turns. Slow start, but as I continued to read, I got used to her writing style and ended up really enjoying the rest of the book. - Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
This is probably the most well-known book on the list since it was made into a movie that stared Julia Roberts. Eat, Pray, Love takes readers on a journey to Italy, India and Bali as Gilbert leaves everything behind in order to figure out what she wants out of life. Gilbert immerses herself in all three cultures by doing some unconventional things in order to bring about peace and balance.
So… While we’re all in quarantine, these books are the perfect opportunity reading our way around the world and planning our next trip while catching up on some drama, history and great storytelling.
