Mother’s Day Vacation Ideas

Honoring Mother’s Day is centuries old. It is thought to have originated in ancient Greece, where they would hold festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of all the Greek gods.  Others believe the Egyptians were the first to celebrate Mother’s Day, when honoring the goddess Isis, who was commonly regarded as the mother of the pharaohs.  In the U.S., Congress approved the observation of Mother’s Day in 1914.  Flowers, cards, home made meals or eating out at a restaurants are popular on this special day.

Family getaways are a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day.  You don’t have to schedule the trip on the actual holiday, but rather decide what time of year is best for the family.  We have seen clients get very creative over the years. One husband took his wife to an Italian restaurant to then show her tickets for a family trip to Italy.  Another packed clues in a box including a glass apple (to symbolize the “Big Apple,” ) for his wife to guess that he had booked a weekend getaway to New York city.

Cruises are always popular family vacations, as they offer a great value with most expenses included.  Disney vacations have great specials available for summer travel, and lots of resorts have specials like the free VIP in Paradise package for moms at the Sands at Grace Bay in Turks & Caicos or the Mom’s Stay Free promotion at the FDR Resort in Jamaica.  We’d be happy to help you put together the right trip, or just a gift certificate and let mom choose where she would like to go.

If travel is not in your budget for this year, the most important thing is that you enjoy your time together…take mom out to a nice brunch, have a picnic, or make a special meal.  Other nice gifts are a spa package, create a scrap book of family photos,  make a home movie or turn your mom’s recipes into a family cookbook.
