Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

On a recent road trip, we decided to stop by the Patriots Point Museum in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.  Here you can relive some of America’s finest moments aboard the USS Yorktown, which was commissioned on April 15, 1943, and fought many historic battles during World War II.  The flight deck, hangar bay and may other working and living areas are open to visitor daily.  Make sure and wear your walking shoes!  When you first walk in, there is an amazing display of airplanes, so you can see how the fighter planes have evolved over the years.  There is also a flight simulator, medal of honor museum, cafeteria and gift shop.  If you enjoy history, give yourself at least 2 to 3 hours to walk around.

At the time of our visit we were also able to board the Submarine Clamagore. You can walk the control room, berthing and mess areas, engine rooms and maneuvering rooms with displays of submarine warfare throughout.  It’s difficult to describe what a moving experience it was to see how soldiers would at time sleep on cots on top of bombs…it is truly history that you can touch and feel.
