This post regarding which cruise lines require a COVID-19 vaccine is accurate as of September 1, 2022. Company policies are actively changing with the world’s treatment of the pandemic so while everything below is accurate to the date of this post, be sure to check with individual companies to see where they stand at the moment on COVID-19 vaccinations, travel requirements, and more.
*************************************
As the travel industry continues to adapt to this post-pandemic work, different tour companies and cruise lines are adapting in different ways. While the necessity for more thorough health and safety protocols has shown many of them revamping their entire tour and cruise processes, the expanding availability of COVID-19 vaccines is pushing some industry leaders to require them to book with them. Only months ago, the main question being asked by travelers was “will I have to wear a mask while cruising?”
Now, many cruise lines have been making amendments to their vaccination and testing requirements. Here is a rundown of what you can expect. As always check with the cruise lines directly to confirm before traveling.
Do I Need A COVID-19 Vaccine To Cruise?
For many cruise lines, the answer is yes. Others such as Carnival Cruise Line have not made a decision at this time. Below, we go into detail about the different cruise lines that require COVID-19 vaccines and others that prioritize travelers that have them already. Keep in mind that this will all likely change in time.
Which Cruise Lines Require A COVID-19 Vaccine to cruise?
While the specificity indicated by this group of cruise lines may vary, these companies require vaccines to travel with them on all trips.
AmaWaterways
Who needs to be vaccinated: All guests and crew
Travelers are also responsible for ensuring they meet the travel entry requirements of each country visited during their river cruise. AmaWaterways is currently operating our river cruise ships with vaccination rates approaching 100%. To align with the current international travel environment and country entry requirements, we have recently updated our guidelines. We have in place an exemption process that may result in a small number of guests onboard who are not fully vaccinated due to religious, medical, and other guest considerations. These guests will be required to complete, and have available to show at the time of embarkation, a negative PCR or Antigen test was taken no more than 48 hours prior to embarkation or a Covid-19 recovery letter no older than 60 days prior to embarkation.
Prior to boarding, an online Health Questionnaire will be required. You will be asked to complete this form no later than 21 days prior to the beginning of your AmaWaterways purchased services. This is required for you to board the ship. IMPORTANT NOTE: Online Cruise Check-in closes at 7 days prior to departure. Guests are no longer required to wear masks while on board our ships. Masks remain a personal choice for guests who wish to continue to wear them. Carnival Cruise Line

Who needs to be vaccinated: Passengers 12 and older, all crew members
Carnival is pleased to announce that we are adjusting certain protocols to reflect the lifting of CDC requirements for the U.S. cruise industry. These changes will be made in phases and focused on short cruise itineraries of 5 nights or less. Vaccinated cruises are available for guests who have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the sailing day (not counting embarkation day) and have proof of vaccination.
While the CDC has strongly recommended that individuals obtain a COVID-19 booster vaccination, when eligible, for the purposes of Carnival’s protocols, the definition of “fully vaccinated” does not generally include reference to a booster except when explicitly stated. Boosters may be required for specific voyages based on duration or destination requirements.
The following voyages require guests, age 12 and older, to be fully vaccinated. In addition, all guests, age 18 and older, who are more than 6 months past the last dose of their initial vaccine series must be boosted (if eligible) in order to sail:

Princess Cruises
Who needs to be vaccinated: Beginning Sept. 6 Princess will be removing the vaccination requirement for most voyages of less than 16 days. They will also be adjusting pre-travel testing requirements to make cruising with them less complicated
The CDC currently allows cruise lines to carry up to 10% of unvaccinated guests, meaning there are more opportunities for all our guests to sail with us. We manage an exemption process for guests who are not vaccinated regardless of the reason, subject to the regulations of the ports we visit. Exemptions are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Children under 5 years old (who are not yet eligible for COVID-19 vaccines) are not required to apply for an exemption but must still follow all other requirements for unvaccinated guests.
Voyages that include Canada: Please note that cruises that begin, end or visit Canada will require sailing guests ages 12 and above who are not Canadian citizens be fully vaccinated unless they are granted a medical exemption. Note all Alaska voyages include Canadian ports.
Some countries and regions also have a time limit for when the last dose was given or a booster requirement. The U.S. CDC recommends a booster five months after your mRNA COVID-19 vaccine series; other countries and regions allow for up to nine months. Following the CDC guidance meets the requirements of most of the ports we visit. Vaccination entry requirements can change without notice, so we recommend you keep your vaccination status up to date and become familiar with the requirements for the destinations you plan to visit.
Guests can submit digital or paper records, or QR codes, showing the vaccine type, the date of each vaccine dose administered, the individual’s name and date of birth or another identifier.

Present valid proof of vaccination (any guest joining the ship must have completed the vaccination process), negative Covid-19 RT-PCR test results, and a completed health declaration and questionnaire form to ship staff. 30-6 days prior to traveling, travelers must register with the French Polynesian government by filling out an Electronic Travel Information System form (ETIS), and uploading proof of vaccination. During this process travelers will be required to purchase travel insurance or to sign a declaration assuming all associated medical, confinement, or reparation costs should they fall ill during their stay. Upon completing the ETIS registration travelers will receive an email receipt within 2 days that they will be required to present at the airport. Any guest disembarking the ship throughout the duration of the voyage will be required to take an antigen rapid test every 3 days until they disembark the ship. Guests who choose to go ashore on a non-organized shore excursion will be required to mandatory Covid-19 Ag testing every 3 days until they disembark. On the day of departure from French Polynesia, all air passengers traveling to the United States, including U.S. Citizens and fully vaccinated travelers, are required to present a negative antigen rapid test result prior to boarding the flight. This test is at the traveler’s expense.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Who needs to be vaccinated: Effective September 3, 2022, Regent Seven Seas Cruises® will welcome unvaccinated guests onboard our ships. This will provide the opportunity for all luxury travelers to explore the world.
Regent’s SailSAFE Health & Safety protocols for embarkation will be as follows:
- Vaccinated travelers will not need to test prior to embarkation, subject to local regulations.
- Unvaccinated travelers may embark with a negative COVID-19 antigen or PCR test from a lab or pharmacy taken within 3 days prior to embarkation, subject to local regulations.
- Testing and vaccination requirements will differ for guests traveling on voyages departing from destinations with specific local health regulations, including but not limited to Canada, Greece, the Bahamas and Bermuda. These requirements will be highlighted to guests approximately 30 days prior to sailing.
The relaxation of this policy is in line with the greater travel industry around the globe as society continues to adapt and return to a state of normalcy. While this requirement is relaxed, Regent Seven Seas Cruises continues to strongly recommend that all guests test at their convenience prior to travel.

Silversea Cruises

- Unvaccinated travellers may embark a Silversea vessel in certain areas of the world. Unvaccinated guests will need to provide a negative COVID-19 Antigen or PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to embarkation, subject to local requirements.
- Testing and vaccination requirements will differ for guests traveling on voyages departing from destinations with specific local health regulations, including but not limited to Australia, Bermuda, Canada and Greece. These requirements will be highlighted to guests approximately 15-days prior to sailing.
For voyages that begin through September 4, 2022, all guests and crew must be fully vaccinated, at least 2 weeks prior to embarkation, in order to board the vessel.

– Your name, which should match the name on your travel document
– Your date of birth
– The result of the test
– The date the test sample was collected
– The name of the test provider
– Confirmation of the type of test provided
Up to Date Vaccinated Guests: You will need to be fully up to date with your vaccine status (“up to date” means a person has received all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when eligible), in accordance with each of the countries you plan to visit on your respective itinerary. We recommend that you refer to each country’s official government website to understand the complete vaccination status requirements for entry, as the ability to roam freely, enter restaurants, cultural institutions, etc. For example, some countries may allow entry for fully vaccinated travellers, but will require “up to date” vaccine status to dine at a restaurant. It is your responsibility to ensure you are adequately inoculated to enter and enjoy the countries on your itinerary.
Similar to testing, we have seen that destinations across the globe are now updating validity dates for vaccination series. Many countries have differing rules (both based on residency and as entry requirements), with most now indicating an “up to date” COVID-19 vaccine includes an additional dose anywhere from 90 to 270 days past the original series completion date. Quite simply, the vaccine will no longer be considered up to date unless an additional dose has been received after a certain time has elapsed from the completion of the primary series. So while the booster (or an additional dose) is not necessarily a requirement to sail with us, an up to date vaccination series is.
Please know that the health and safety of our guests, as well as that of our crew and the communities we visit, remain a priority for us at Silversea. Rest assured that we will continue to work closely with relevant governing bodies and health authorities to navigate this evolving landscape, as new health recommendations are issued and as the situation advances.

Virgin Voyages

- Virgin is removing requirements for a COVID-19 test to board as of 7/24/22 (for Valiant Lady) and 7/27/22 (for Scarlet Lady) for vaccinated Sailors.
- They are still require the majority (90%) of Sailors to be vaccinated.
- Virgin Cruises is opening up their voyages for a limited number (10%) of unvaccinated Sailors.
- Unvaccinated Sailors are required to bring a negative COVID-19 test taken within 24-hours, or at the terminal for a fee of $30 on their embarkation date.
- Their Crew will remain fully vaccinated.
Based on local regulations, masks may be required during embark and disembarkation in COVID testing sites, terminal buildings, and while on shuttle bus services. We’ll provide masks on request for any Sailor who may need or want one while onboard. While off the ship at each port, we’ll be following local government guidelines as it pertains to mask-wearing and we ask that our Sailors adhere to their local mandates.
Upon arrival, all Sailors are required to fill out a health declaration (aka the health check form). Those who have answered “yes” to any of the questions will be sent to a secondary screening in the event that they may have been exposed or potentially infected.
- In addition to pre-voyage assessments completed by those who are deemed high risk of becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2 (Coronavirus), we will collect a pre-voyage medical questionnaire/health declaration that all Sailors must complete before boarding the ship
- This pre-voyage medical questionnaire opens up for completion in the Virgin Voyages Sailor App — 24 hours prior to sailing
- Sailors cannot board the ship until they have completed this questionnaire
- If Sailors’ responses cause our medical team concern (i.e. a Sailor has answered “Yes” to any question) Sailors will be asked, on arrival at the terminal, to meet with the Virgin Voyages medical care crew for an evaluation prior to boarding
- The medical care team will decide, based on this evaluation, if a Sailor is fit to travel or not
- If deemed not fit to travel, those particular Sailors will be denied boarding
