Two New PortMiami Terminals
If you’ve ever been to PortMiami in Florida you’ve probably been in awe of not only the amenities and innovations, but the sheer amount of people that make its way through it. The busiest cruise port in the world, is about to get an overhaul. Two new PortMiami terminals are expected to be built to accommodate a few more large vessels at PortMiami. This very expensive expansion project will be especially beneficial to Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line, as well as the many passengers that will be sailing on these ships.
Terminal A
Royal Caribbean’s new terminal will open this fall. The official name for this terminal will be Crown of Miami. The grand total for this expansion is supposed to be right around $247 million, but will allow some of the biggest cruise ships in the world to dock here. Both the Symphony of the Seas cruise ship and Allure of the Seas cruise ship will soon call Terminal A home. The former is actually the largest passenger ship in the world and has the capacity to hold over 6,600 passengers so expect PortMiami to get a lot busier. Both ships will be sailing to the Caribbean. Currently PortMiami receives around 750,000 passengers each year which is around 15% of all of the passenger traffic at the port. After the terminal is opened it is expected to increase to 1.8 million passengers and about 30% of the port’s passenger traffic.
Terminal B
Construction on this terminal, which will be renamed The Pearl, hasn’t started yet. Groundbreaking is expected to take place in May 2019 and be completed in November 2019. Once construction of it is finished it will house Norwegian Encore cruise ship which is the Breakaway Plus class’ fourth cruise ship. This ship will sail to the Caribbean seasonally once it makes its way to this new terminal. In the past, embarking and debarking was a nightmare for passengers. This new terminal should be able to alleviate all of that because it will have a lot of space and be transparent at night. Currently Norwegian Cruise Line’s passengers account for over 1 million passengers annually at PortMiami. While final approval for Terminal B hasn’t been approved yet by Miami-Dade County, it is expected that we will see that in early May as the expansion of the port will bring a lot of revenue to this area.
