River cruise lines are expanding their horizons beyond Europe and setting their sights on exotic destinations, with Egypt topping the list as the most coveted location. For many, visiting Egypt is a bucket list item, and recent developments have made it even more enticing.
The resurgence of interest in Egypt can be attributed to several trends in travel, including multigenerational trips, longer stays, and the desire to check off bucket-list destinations. In addition, the remake of “Death on the Nile” has also sparked renewed interest in this magical land, steeped in history and fantasy.

River cruise companies such as Viking River Cruises and AMA Waterways lead the charge and have introduced new ships on the Nile River. Viking, for instance, is launching the Viking Aton this August, a year after the introduction of its second ship on the river, the Viking Osiris. The 41-cabin Aton will be a sister ship to the Osiris and offer the 12-day Pharaohs and Pyramids itinerary there are dates available into 2025. The Viking Hathor and Viking Sobek will follow in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

AMA Waterways, which had ships in Egypt from 2006 until the 2011 Egyptian revolution, is also expanding its offerings. In 2024, the company will introduce the 41-cabin AmaLilia, a sister ship to the AmaDahlia, launched in 2021. The AmaLilia will feature 13 suites, regionally inspired decor, and a specialty restaurant.

Uniworld is also jumping on the bandwagon with its family-friendly Generations Collection program, which will include Egypt later this year. Families will be able to explore Egypt on the line’s 12-day Splendors of Egypt and the Nile itinerary onboard the River Tosca. New features have been added, including a chance to meet and interact with local children and the option to donate school supplies, books, and games to their communities.

With travelers seeking better value for their vacations, AMA Waterways offers a free pre- and post-cruise land package to those sailing in Egypt this year, providing a longer and more immersive travel experience. This added value can amount to up to $3800 per couple.
In conclusion, Egypt and Nile River Cruises are definitely back on the map as a must-visit destination, and river cruise lines are taking notice. With new ships, expanded itineraries, and added value offerings, now is the perfect time to explore this fascinating land.
