You probably know that hurricane season is at its peak in September. If you’re planning an early fall getaway, therefore, you might be tempted to write off the Caribbean as a potential destination. The truth is, however, that although this tropical region can be affected by hurricanes, there might not be a better place to be, if you are looking for sun, sand and surf. Here are some things to keep in mind if you are considering a trip to the Caribbean in September:

  • The risk of hurricanes isn’t that high. At any given time, the risk of a hurricane affecting the exact region that you are in is really not very great at all. Also, your risk depends on where you are going: Bermuda and the Bahamas have 25% and 20% chances, respectively, of being hit by a hurricane in any given year. This means that the majority of years, they’re not affected at all. If you want to reduce your chances further, though, try the southern Caribbean. Islands like Aruba, Grenada and Barbados rarely experience hurricanes. Also, those islands in the Western Caribbean are less likely to be affected than those in the Eastern Caribbean.

  • Prices are low this time of year. Probably because many people avoid travel to the Caribbean during hurricane season, the travel industry as a whole tends to offer lower prices for those wishing to visit this region of the world. Take advantage of low season rates!

  • Don’t forget about cruising! Caribbean cruise prices tend to be low this time of year, as well, and this fall is no exception. Since most kids are back to school cruise ships are not crowded and great prices are available!
  • The Beaches, the Sunsets, the Food. There are so many beautiful beaches and most are not crowded and the weather is great so September is the time to go! So many of the islands offer a variety of cuisines and the seafood is amazing!
  • Festivals. The Caribbean is know for some amazing festivals her is a quick rundown. Antigua Sailing Week is in late April. Grenada has a sailing festival in late January to February.
