Limon Costa Rica Port Guide: Best Shore Excursions & Things to Do

1727

Stretching along the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, the Limon province is one of the most beautiful locations in the world. A magical mixture of mangroves, pristine beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes, lush tropical rainforests and amazing wildlife.

Into the Jungle:  The Caribbean coast of Limon is rich with verdant jungle.  The best way to explore it is by taking a boat ride upriver on the Rio Colorado to Tortuguero.  Watch the trees for monkey, brilliantly colored birds and butterflies.

Aerial Tram:  Take the fascinating ride, which has been featured on the Discovery Channel, through the forest canopy and its hanging gardens aboard the famous Jungle Train to explore deep into the jungles.

Visit a local market for fresh fruits including mangoes, bananas, coconut, pineapples and papayas.  Some excursions will take you to a Pineapple farm or banana plantation. Remember you can’t take any fruit with you back on the ship!

Interested in tasting the local cuisine?  Rice and peas are staples.  Peas in this area refers to red or black beans. Coconut milk, cilantro, onion and curry add a unique tropical taste in many popular dishes.

Visit San Jose on a city tour. During your sightseeing you will pass by The Yellow House, Central Park, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, stopping to visit the National Museum.  Shop for Costa Rican handicrafts and art.  Please note that it is a 2.5 to 3 hour drive.  It is very scenic, and many excursions include the Braulio Carrillo National Park as part of the trip.

For the adventurous, take a canopy tour, off road adventure, tubing or kayak trip. Check the cruise line you are sailing with for a list of excursions and book early, as these do sell out.

Costa Rica is a wonderful destination for a family vacation as there are activities for all ages, and it’s quite affordable.  If one day in port is not enough, there are some wonderful Costa Rica tours starting at just $995 pp for a week that includes hotel, meals and sightseeing.
