You likely know this delicious, buttery pastry by its English name, apple strudel.  Viennese Apfelstrudel is made with flour, butter, apples, sugar, and cinnamon, and is characterized by its flaky crust.  Austrians love their apfelstrudel so much, it is considered one of the national dishes of Austria.

Wiener Schnitzel
Another beloved national dish of Austria is wiener schnitzel, a thin piece of veal that has been breaded and fried to crispness.  Wiener schnitzel is traditionally served with salad or parsley potatoes.  While you can find this popular dish at many German or Austrian restaurants, wiener schnitzel is a must-try when in Austria.

Vienna Sausage

Kaiserschmarrn

Last but not least, another must-try local food in Austria is the beloved Topfentascherl.  Topfentascherl are cheese curd and fruit-filled squares of pastry that are especially popular in Vienna.
