Cosmopolitan Amsterdam is most famous for its narrow, gabled houses lining the canals.

If you are only visiting for the day, here is our list of what to do with a Day in Amsterdam.

  • Windmills – Windmills dot the landscape of Zaanse Shancs, a timberclad neighborhood of wooden houses, cheese farms and clog-carving workshops on the Zaan river.
  • Cruise – take a private boat for a 1 hour canal tour. In addition, where you can admire historic buildings and merchant houses with impressive gables and pass under many romantic, picturesque arched bridges.
  • High tea – Take a break from sightseeing with a royal high tea in a glass covered lounge at the Intercontinental Amstel Amsterdam.
  • Foodhallen – Bring your appetite to Foodhallen where a guide will escort you through a maze of global food stalls.  The caramel infused stroopwafels – a Dutch favorite, are a standout.
  • Art Lovers – A day with an art historian opens doors to private galleries. However, including the cutting edge Modern Contemporary Museum Amsterdam and canal-side mansions housing vast collections. Reijksmueum, the famous national museum of Art is another popular place for art lovers.  Therefore, you can see over 206 of Van Gogh’s paintings throughout the cities museums.
  • Library – For sweeping city views, one of Amsterdam’s best kept secrets is cocktail hour on the Central Library’s rooftop terrace.
  • Pottery – Delftware pottery is best sourced from the Royal Delft Factory, where you can participate in a workshop to paint earthenware in the famous blue patterns.

Here is a suggested itinerary of a private tour of Amsterdam we can arrange for you:

You are met at the port or hotel, and transferred to Dam Square where your morning’s walking tour includes the notable Royal Palace.  Admire the views of the canals and the gabled houses of the Canal Ring district, where you will visit the house in which Anne Frank wrote her celebrated diary during the last war.

After lunch at Foodhallen, explore the beautifully-restored Rijksmuseum, to admire the stunning collection of masterpieces from the seventeenth-century Golden Age, including works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. No visit to Amsterdam would be complete without seeing the delightful Van Gogh Museum. Home to many of his famous works as well as those of other Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.  End you tour with an afternoon cocktail on the rooftop.
