Places to Visit: Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

985

Luxembourg is a tiny country tucked between France, Germany and Belgium, and Luxembourg City is its capital. Staying in the capital city will make it easy to get anywhere in the country, as it’s a small geographic area. If you are visiting any of the Western European countries in the vicinity, Luxembourg makes a great destination for a weekend or even a day-trip. You could also spend your entire week in Luxembourg, using the country as your “home base” as you travel to other nearby countries. While the national language is Luxembourgish, in order to graduate from high school, students must be fluent in both French and German. Also, most of those living in the country speak English, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting around. If you choose to visit this small country, here are some places to stay, places to eat, and things to do:

Where to Stay
If you want to stay in the main square of Luxembourg City, one of the highly favored hotels is Le Place d’Armes Hotel. The rooms are described as outstanding and spacious, and the hotel staff as friendly and helpful. You’ll be right in the center of everything going on in the city, but the hotel is said to be quieter than you would expect in a bustling area. Those preferring a lower-priced option might consider the Luxembourg City Hostel, which is suitable for individuals, groups and families. The hostel is also equipped for those in wheelchairs or with other disabilities. Meals are available, as is storage for your items and your bicycle.

What to Eat
If you’re staying in the square, you will undoubtedly find plenty of delicacies and eateries. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, head over to Place Guillaume, where you will find an excellent farmer’s market. The selections vary, as it’s up to the vendors to supply whatever they have that is in season and popular, but you will be able to chat with them and taste their wares, which will range from freshly picked produce, to homemade cheese, to carefully cooked local favorites. A restaurant that is at the top of the list in Luxembourg City is Clairefontaine. Here, you can choose the gourmet menu, which includes appetizers, the main course and a dessert, or you can pick out what you would like from the a la carte menu. Between the atmosphere, the flavors and the presentation, you will not be disappointed.

Things to Do
Right in the heart of the city, you can enjoy sights such as the Palais Grand-Ducal, which is where Spanish royals used to live in the 1570s, or the Luxembourg City History Museum. The Wenzel Walk is one of several guided walks run by the city’s tourist office, which will take you through various parts of the city, including some nature trails. There is also a U.S. military cemetery, which is just a few kilometers out of the main city. Because you will be such a short drive from Belgium, France and Germany, you can easily visit these areas, as well.

While the typical traveler might not consider Luxembourg as a vacation destination, this little gem has something to please everyone! Have you visited Luxembourg City? Tell us about your experiences!
