Popular Destinations in Crete

Crete is the largest Greek Island and features incredible mountains, small villages, and phenomenal beaches. It has an intriguing history, as it was home to the first advanced European civilization, the Minoans. This means that there are a lot of different historical attractions scattered throughout the island. These are some of the most popular destinations to visit in Crete.

Chania Town

This town was built back in the 1300s. It was once a popular trade center but later was abandoned for other harbors that could accommodate bigger ships. However, it has become a popular place for tourists to visit, as they can tour the lighthouse, which is one of the oldest ones in the world. Construction started on it in 1595.

Rethymnon’s Old Town

First established in 1204, this old town features both Crete and Venetian architecture. It has narrow streets that are filled with diners and shops. While here, be sure to check out the Fortezza Castle that was built in 1590. The castle and old town both lend a glimpse into the unique past of Rethymnon. A word of caution, though, is that many tourists find themselves getting lost here since it is quite easy to lose your bearings. However, the town isn’t that big and many locals will help you find your way so just ask!

Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Because Crete is filled with such an interesting history, many individuals visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum while they are here. It’s considered to be one of the most meaningful museums in Greece. It has an extensive collection of Minoan related artwork and artifacts that include frescoes from the Minoan Palace. Other things to see include the Phaistos Disk and Bull-Leaping Fresco. An interesting fact about the museum is that each of the artifacts located here was discovered on the island itself.

Hersonissos

This fishing harbor is definitely worth a visit! It has a lot of trendy spots like little boutiques where you can easily find a bargain. You can also catch a ride on the Tourist Train so that you can see much of the coastline. While you are in Hersonissos, make sure you stop at one of the many tavernas or restaurants to get a taste of the local fare. This location is in fairly close proximity to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, also.

Agios Nikolaos

Located in eastern Crete, this town is interesting in that it features both traditional and modern Greek architecture. Because of its size, there’s plenty to see here. Lake Voulismeni is the most popular place to visit due to not only its beauty but that the popular legend that the goddess Athena once bathed in it. Some also believe that the lake is bottomless.
