Places to Visit: Tenerife

923

If you’re considering a vacation to the Canary Islands, Tenerife should be high on your list when thinking about which island to visit. It’s the largest of the islands, and in all of that space there is a lot there to offer to tourists who want to explore. Do you want to see beaches, deserts, or mountains? Tenerife has all of that and more, along with a busy nightlife and a host of activities designed to entertain tourists and travelers. While Tenerife is lovely to visit any time of year, the island is becoming increasingly popular in the winter time due to its mild climate. February is a particularly good time to visit and take in the local Carnival of Santa Cruz, which includes parades, music, and celebrations in the streets.

  • Where to Stay in Tenerife. If you’re looking for an upscale hotel experience, the clear winning choice is the Hotel San Roque in Garachico. Here you can spend your vacation feeling as pampered and indulged as any movie star. The hotel was once an 18th century mansion and is now the height of luxury on Tenerife. To really get the most out of the experience, go for a suite and enjoy the minibar, in-room jacuzzi, and satellite TV. Order gourmet meals and snacks from the restaurant and eat around the pool, and then enjoy some golf, tennis, or horseback riding, or explore a nearby historical site.

  • Where to Eat in Tenerife. No trip to Tenerife would be complete without sampling the local seafood. For some of the tastiest seafood in Tenerife, get an oceanfront table at La Vieja. La Vieja serves high-quality fresh fish that is caught locally, along with a number of meat dishes. Try the seafood sampler, which comes with lobster, crawfish, prawns, scallops, and cockles, or the filet steak in pepper sauce. Don’t leave La Vieja without trying one of their excellent deserts like the crème brulee or the black and white chocolate mousse.

  • What to Do in Tenerife. Once you’re in Tenerife, you may find it difficult to separate yourself from the pool or the beach, where you can enjoy just relaxing in the sun and cooling off in the water whenever you get too hot. However, if you can resist the temptation to spend all of your time on the sand or the pool deck, Tenerife actually offers a lot of great activities. It’s free to visit Teide National Park, where you can see a giant volcano and tour the unique volcano shaped landscapes around it. If the area looks familiar, it might be because you remember seeing it before in the 2010 movie Clash of the Titans. There is also an impressive zoo, the Loro Parque Zoo located in Puerta de la Cruz that is worth a visit. And of course, Tenerife is a great place for watersports, snorkeling and scuba diving, and whale watching.

Once you’ve spent some time on Tenerife, you’ll understand why the island is increasing in popularity all of the time. Don’t pass up the chance to spend a vacation on this fascinating island.
