Swiss Charm: St. Gallen, Switzerland

1142

There is a small village about 1 hour from the city of Zurich that has all the Swiss charm you imagine when dreaming of this Alpine wonderland.  Nestled in the Alps, Switzerland brings images of adorable cows with festive bells hanging from their necks, delicious fondue dishes to warm the chilly evenings and picturesque beauty of snow-capped mountains.  Many know of the chapel bridge in Lucerne or the banking center in Geneva, but St. Gallen is a unique treasure to be discovered with an insider.

St. Gallen was created as an Abbey with support of St. Gall.  As with all religious centers the monks created a place that fostered growth and prosperity which has lasted hundreds of years.  A visit to the 16th century UNESCO heritage library allows you to don fuzzy slippers and pad your way around the gorgeous illuminated manuscripts.  In the center of this Mecca of learning is a magnificent globe, created with the knowledge of the time and amazingly accurate, a true highlight of the library.

The village is a hamlet, linked to the 21st century by the precise Swiss rail system but also showcasing the power and wealth of citizens from yesterday, their 17th century homes painted with spectacular frescoes showing the reaches of their trade around the world.  St. Gallen was also the city that produced textiles and you can visit the local museum highlighting their contribution to this industry.

Wander the cobblestone streets enjoying the undeniable Swiss architecture that is still very visible throughout town.  Then walk the city blocks in the heart of town, a modern art installation of red “carpet” that includes an open air living room. This is where you can find the locals meeting for business on a beautiful day or gathering for a night of festivities.  Be sure to stop in one of the many shoppes that sells the local delicacy of beiber, not the over-hyped pop star but the marzipan like treat made famous in St. Gallen.

Nearby St. Gallen, you can also visit the beautiful Appenzell.  Taste the local apple based liquor made here and enjoy a “Be My Guest” lunch of the traditional “stubete”.  This village is said to be a living tradition with the Alpine yodelers who combine their harmonies for a melodious feast for the ears.

St. Gallen is featured on Trafalgar’s new 8 day “Swiss Delight” itinerary.  Designed specifically for the US traveller with limited vacation time.  For those ski enthusiasts, this trip also operates in the winter.  Discover the hidden treasure of St. Gallen with Trafalgar.
