Jordan’s Gems

It’s one of those countries you’ve seen through the eyes of National Geographic and Hollywood (think Indiana Jones) and wondered, “where is that?” Ahlan Wa Sahlan. Welcome to Jordan.

Jordan is a timeless country, steeped in history. It has been home to some of mankind’s earliest settlements and villages (relics of many of the world’s great civilizations can still be seen) and today continues to enthrall as a modern, vibrant nation.  There are many treasures to be found in this storied Middle Eastern country. The magnificent Nabatean city of Petra, popularized in the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” was named one of the world’s new seven wonders. This “rose-red city half as old as time” is known for its dramatic tombs and temple facades, including one that served as a church during Byzantine times. The city’s inhabitants, Nabataean Arabs, carved structures into the soft sandstone more than two millennia ago.

Archaeological jewels abound throughout Jordan, from the Neolithic remains in the capital of Amman to the desert castles at Qusair Amra. Greco-Roman ruins blanket ancient Jerash, while Madaba – the “City of Mosaics” – is lauded for its mosaic map of the Holy Land, made from two million pieces of brightly colored stone.

Of course, visitors to Jordan will also discover a bounty of natural wonders, from camping amidst the majestically haunting, primeval starkness of Wadi Rum to being treated like modern-day royalty at an array of first-class resorts and spas at the lowest point on Earth, the Dead Sea. Visitors experience several different kinds of mineral hot springs and the thick, warm brine of the Dead Sea, which are both soothing and therapeutic. Even Queen Cleopatra was lured by its restorative salt waters and mineral-rich mud. One of the great water adventures in Jordan is to hike, climb and sometimes even wade or swim through the magnificent gorge of the Wadi Mujib, along the east coast of the Dead Sea, to reach a magical pool and waterfall that emerge like a mirage from amidst the surrounding warm cliffs and barren hillsides.

Jordan, famed for its hospitality, is a unique destination offering breathtaking and mysterious sights, high standard accommodations, exquisite cuisine and countless activities that can provide visitors with inspiration, motivation, rejuvenation and a guaranteed experience of a lifetime!
