If you’re planning a trip to Abu Dhabi, the second largest city and capital of the United Arab Emirates, you may be wondering what exactly you need to pack for your stay. Abu Dhabi’s climate and culture may both be very different from what you are used to, so it’s important to take those things into consideration when packing. Here are a few suggestions to help you when packing for your vacation.
- Consider the climate. Abu Dhabi has a sub-tropical arid climate, so you can expect warm, or at least mild, temperatures year-round. A typical winter night can reach lows of around 50F, and a summer day can reach highs of around 118F. The winter months, between November and March, are when the area gets most of its rainfall. For most of the year, summer-style clothes are advised. Consider the indoor climate as well, though: Some visitors warn that Abu Dhabi relies heavily on air conditioning, and that the air conditioning works very well. In other words, while it may be warm outside, it might very well be cold inside! Keeping this in mind, it’s a good idea to bring sweaters, shawls, or other comfortable cover ups for use indoors.
- Consider the culture. Abu Dhabi is a country with a more conservative cultural climate. While out shopping, in government buildings, or in other social settings, it is considered courteous and respectful to wear clothing that adheres to the local customs. For ladies in particular, you should bring clothes that cover shoulders and knees. Tight or short clothing is not encouraged, and may draw unwelcome attention. Loose clothing is appropriate for men and women, and will likely be more comfortable in the outdoor heat anyhow. Malls, health clubs, tourist resorts, and restaurants are liable to be more accepting of Western fashion, but again, plan on bringing something to cover up with in case the air conditioning is too cold.
- Beyond the wardrobe. Some travelers suggest packing ear plugs for sleeping; this may be a good idea if you do not wish to be awakened by the morning call to prayer. Most over the counter drugs are available here, but if aspirin is your pain reliever of choice, you would be wise to bring your own; aspirin in Abu Dhabi is very expensive and is formulated to be dissolved in water rather than swallowed as a pill. Some prescription and over the counter drugs are forbidden to be brought into Abu Dhabi at all, so check the embassy website before you go for an updated list of contraband items.
You’ll find that many daily items you might want such as sunscreen, beach towels, and sandals are both widely available and inexpensive in Abu Dhabi, so you can safely travel lightly. Just remember to save room in your luggage for the purchases you make!
