The Inca Ruins in Cusco, Peru are one of the most popular destinations for travelers on a South American vacation.

Sacsayhuaman is a stone fortress that is about a 30-minute walk from the center of the Cusco ruins. Several of the rocks are over 11-feet tall and weigh up to 300 tons. It is still unknown what the structure was used for, but many experts believe it either served as a religious temple or military purposes. Regardless, it sits atop a steep hill that overlooks Cusco, providing an impressive view.

Travelers can follow a road from Sacsayhuaman that will take them to the temple of Q’enko. There, adventurous visitors can explore caves and tunnels that are located beneath a large limestone rock. The structure is hollowed out and may have been used for animal sacrifices. Individuals can even climb the mysterious structure and view the detailed markings on the stone.

Another popular ruin to visit is Tambomachay. There are three tiers of stone platforms and water still flows through the intricate structure that contains aqueducts, canals and a pool.
