If you’re a hiker, you already know the joy in discovering a particularly stellar hiking trail. Whether it’s the views, the close proximity to nature, or the personal challenge that you enjoy the most, it’s always wonderful to take a hike that gives you exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a location that offers memorable and thrilling hiking experiences, you couldn’t ask for much better than the great state of California. California offers some of the most standout hiking destinations anywhere. Because of the state’s diverse landscape, you’ll be able to find whatever kind of hiking opportunity that most appeals to you. Here is a small sample of the spectacular California destinations that await you and your hiking boots.

  • Half Dome. This is probably California’s most famous hiking destination; people come from all over the world to give this hike their best shot. This one is not for beginners; it’s a daylong hike that requires that the hiker be in peak physical condition. If you’re planning on attempting this hike, make sure that you plan and prepare appropriately; it’s a true challenge. Half Dome, located in Yosemite National Park, is a 16 mile round-trip hike. The best time of year for this hike is between May and October.
  • The Mist Trail. This one is a more moderate hike that should take about half of a day. The Mist Trail is another Yosemite National Park trail, and it will take you right alongside of two giant waterfalls, the Vernal Fall and the Nevada Falls. As you meander the trail, you’ll see more of Yosemite’s stunning natural beauty. There are rest stops and water fountains along the way, but you’ll need to be sure to bring some water along anyway, to hold you over in between stops. This hike is best done in the spring or summer months.
  • The Green Route. This trail is a relatively short and easy 2.9 mile loop, located in the Crystal Cove State Park. As the name of the route suggests, The Green Route will provide you with an opportunity to see lots of gorgeous greenery. You’re also likely to see a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, bobcats, rabbits, and coyotes. The best time to observe these creatures along the route is in the early morning. Look out, though, because rattlesnakes have been known to turn up here as well. This trail is great for a good workout and a bit of back-country beauty.

There are dozens of hiking trails in the state of California, ranging from easy to moderate to extremely advanced. A dedicated hiker at any level who is visiting this state is sure to find what he’s looking for here.
