200325572-001If you want to try your hand at slot machines, Texas Hold’em poker or blackjack, your first thought might be to visit Las Vegas, also known as The Gambling Capital of the World. If Sin City is too far away or you’re not planning a trip there, you can still get your casino fix in other places! You probably already know about Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Reno, Nevada, so here are three casino vacation destinations that you might not have thought of:

  • Connecticut  The Nutmeg State is home to two large casino resorts: Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. Both located in the eastern part of the state, they’re close enough to one another that you can visit one on each day of a weekend, if you so desire, and head to Rhode Island for some sightseeing as well. Foxwoods is located in Ledyard, and is the larger of the two resorts, offering six casinos, spas, golf, a museum, extensive shopping and several four-star hotels. Mohegan Sun, in Uncasville, offers three casinos along with an active nightlife, sports stadiums, a theater and other entertainment options.

  • Mississippi  Tunica, Mississippi, is home to nine world-class casino hotels, including Bally’s, Gold Strike, Hurrah’s, and the Tunica Roadhouse. While you’re in Tunica, you can check out what the city was like before the casinos came to town at the Tunica Museum, as well as drop off your kids for their own brand of fun at KidQuest. You’ll be only a half hour’s drive from Memphis when you visit Tunica, so if you get tired of gambling, you’ll have other attractions to check out as well. In Biloxi, you’ll find another nine casinos, along with the entertainment and dining options you’d expect from a tourism hot-spot. There are plenty of family-friendly things to do in Biloxi as well, so feel free to bring the kids along.

  • Louisiana  The Pelican State is home to several casinos. New Orleans has a few to choose from, including Harrah’s New Orleans Casino. Head over to Shreveport for your choice of casino resorts, ranging from the imposing Sam’s Hotel and Casino to the grand Horseshoe Bossier City Casino. You can watch some horseracing at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs and enjoy a tropical experience at Margaritaville’s. To support the local Coushatta community, why not visit the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, where you can enjoy 100,000 square feet of gaming and one of over 900 hotel rooms?

If you are looking to do more than gamble, combine the best of the South with your trip. Savour the sights, sounds and flavors of the South with Insight Vacations. Their 11 day Southern Elegance trip visits the best of Charleston, Savannah, Jekyll Island, Asheville and Atlanta, with an optional 3 day add on to New Orleans.  Another wonderful option is with Trafalgar Tours. You can immerse yourself with soulful music on the Taste and Sounds of the South trip that begins in Nashville and visits Memphis, Natchez and ends with 3 nights in New Orleans.

You can find either commercial or American Indian-run casinos in a majority of the 50 states, so chances are good that there’s a casino within driving distance of you. Is there a casino or a casino resort-town that you would recommend for our readers who want to play the slots, roulette, poker, or other types of gambling games?
