Places to Visit: Savannah, Georgia

1064

Savannah, Georgia, is a place teeming with history and culture. The fifth-largest city in Georgia, Savannah is a vacation destination for millions of visitors every year. It was founded in 1733, at the same time that Georgia became a royal colony. Located in southeast Georgia close to the Atlantic Ocean, Savannah is a great place to visit any time of year, because although it is hot and humid during the warmer months of the year, sea breezes help to keep the climate tolerable. Here are some places not to miss if you decide to visit the “Hostess City of the South.”

  • Historic District  Savannah’s Historic District is one of the largest historic districts in the world, and contains traditional Southern architecture and charm dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of the landmarks in the District include the Colonial Cemetery, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, who was the founder of the Girl Scouts of America. You can take a horse drawn carriage ride through some of the green areas, or take a trolley ride through the District to see all of the sights while you sit and relax.
  • Historic Savannah Theater  If you love Broadway shows, then you won’t be disappointed in this theater. The theater itself was built in 1818, and is the oldest continually operating theater in the country. You can buy concessions such as soft drinks, wine, candy and popcorn before entering the theater, where you’ll be treated to a live show that includes music from different eras, holiday music, Broadway songs and more.
  • Tybee Island This is about 20 minutes away from Savannah by car, but it’s worth the short trip. Here you’ll find beaches, historical sites, and the Tybee Island Lighthouse. Climb to the top (it’s 178 steps) and enjoy the view!
  • Have a Sweet Treat  You may have seen the Savannah Bee Company featured on Rachael Ray’s cooking show, and here’s your chance to see and taste the products for yourself! Try the different flavors before making your final selection. Before you go, pick up a tube of beeswax lip gloss, too! If you’re on River Street, you can also stop by the Savannah Candy Kitchen, where you can choose your favorite types of candy from huge wooden barrels, plastic bags and the glass candy case.
  • Get Some Rest at a B&B  Savannah is known for its historic Bed-and-Breakfasts! You’ll have quite a few to choose from. Some favorites include The 1895 Inn, The Amethyst Inn at Sarah’s Garden, the Green Palm Inn, and Park Avenue Manor. You’ll find that all of these, along with dozens more, will provide the Southern hospitality that you’re hoping to enjoy while in Savannah!

Be sure to take your camera along to Savannah, as the historic architecture is beautiful and you’ll want to relive those memories!
