Staying in a hotel can be scary for some because of the unfamiliar surroundings or simply not being aware of the quality of housekeeping. For others, the fear factor goes even further when staying at a haunted hotel. Throughout the U.S. there are quite a few historic accommodations that have more than just guests walking around.

  • Stanley Hotel, Colorado

This hotel actually inspired author Steven King to write the book, “The Shining”, after he stayed there. There’s a lot of paranormal activity throughout the hotel. Room 418 is supposedly the most haunted, but in Room 408 kids can be heard laughing and playing just outside of the door even though there doesn’t appear to be anyone there. They also like to wreck the room when no one is in there and even leave their handprints on the mirrors. The hotel opened in 1909 and the former owner’s wife, Flor Stanley, still hangs around and haunts it as she can be heard playing the piano at night. Guests have also reported objects flying across the room, toilets flushing mysteriously and faucets turned on in the wee hours of the morning.

  • Coronado San Diego CA

Guests and employees at the Coronado often hear strange noises and feel very cold temperatures in just one spot in a room. There’s also a young female apparition who walks around in a black lace dress. Despite this, it’s considered to be one of the most beautiful beach resorts in the country.

  • 1886 Crescent Hotel  Eureka Springs, AR

There is a lot of paranormal activity at this hotel. The Crystal Dining Room is where a lot of ghost sightings and strange activities have been reported. Ghosts are often seen in the mirrors or sitting at the tables. Things get moved often including chairs and holiday decorations. Outside of the Recreation Room, former employee Dr. Norman Baker is often seen with a confused look on his face.

  • Hotel Galvez  Galveston TX

The most “famous” ghost at this hotel is a bride-to-be named Audra. She stayed at the hotel in the 1950’s in Room 501. She often climbed to the roof to watch her sailor fiancé return to port. On one occasion she got word that his ship had sank and for days she went up to the roof to watch for him, hoping that he would return. Finally she gave up hope and hanged herself. A few days later her fiancé came to the hotel, safe and sound looking for her. A sad Audra is often seen walking around the hotel. Guests also report seeing a young ghost child playing with a ball, candles blowing out and dishes breaking.
