Disney’s Upcoming Live-Action Movies

1774

From The Jungle Book to The Lion King, Disney has been on a trend of remaking their early animated classics. In addition to these live action remakes, the company has also added sequels and spin offs to their upcoming repertoire of releases.

Disney has already found major success with the remakes that have already been released to theaters, grossing over nine billion dollars. They actually started recreating their animated masterpieces back in the nineties when The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians came out. Following these films came the live action remakes of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent (based on Sleeping Beauty) and Cinderella. They then recreated their live action remake of The Jungle Book using the technology of the new decade.

A sequel to the Alice in Wonderland film was released six years after its predecessor, Alice Through the Looking Glass. Beauty and the Beast, Christopher Robin (based on the Winnie the Pooh films), Dumbo, and the aforementioned The Lion King, have all also already been released. A sequel to Maleficent, titled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was released five years after its predecessor. Lady and the Tramp was also released in that same time-frame.

Here is a list of upcoming projects that have been announced by the Disney company:

  • Mulan (postponed release due to COVID-19)
  • Cruella (based on One Hundred and One Dalmatians)
  • Peter Pan & Wendy
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Untitled The Jungle Book Sequel
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • Pinocchio
  • The Sword in the Stone
  • Robin Hood
  • Untitled Aladdin spin-off
  • Lilo & Stitch
  • Untitled Aladdin sequel
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • Rose Red (based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)
  • Bambi

The aforementioned list of films are either already completed, in post/pre-production, or in development. There are also possible future projects that have not yet been confirmed by Disney, but that industry folks know are in the works. Here are those films:

  • Tink (based on Tinker Bell)
  • Charming (based on Cinderella)
  • Genies (a prequel based on Aladdin)
