This isn’t the time of year when most people take a long vacation, but there may be an opportunity for you to take your family on a weekend away. Those living in the northeastern quadrant of the United States might consider a short trip to eastern Pennsylvania. There are many family-friendly attractions in this area of the state. During the late fall, the weather is usually cool, but not so cold that walking around outdoors is intolerable. Here are a few ideas if you should decide to go to Pennsylvania with children:
Please Touch Museum, Philadelphia
This was a huge hit when I took my children here years ago. Catering to kids from 1 to 7 years of age, the Please Touch Museum is all about playing and exploring. Kids can get in touch with their musical sides at the Rainforest Rhythm exhibit, skip down the Hall of Doors and Mirrors in Wonderland, or play with bubbles and rainbows in River Adventures. Admission is $16 for anyone over the age of one year, and group rates are available. Since rainy days tend to be busier, it might be wise to juggle your schedule to make this possible on a sunny day if possible. Also, it’s worth noting that school groups don’t attend on Mondays, so that might be a good day to go with your family to avoid field trip crowds.
Amish Country, Lancaster County
If your family is intrigued by people who live as though it’s last century, consider going for a drive through Lancaster County. The rolling hills and picturesque farms are a treat in themselves, and stopping at one of the Amish-owned stores or diners makes the trip that much more special. The Pennsylvania Dutch, as the Amish are sometimes called, are a deeply religious and family-oriented culture. They don’t use electricity, they drive horse-pulled buggies, and they dress very modestly. You can simply meander the winding roads on your own, or take a guided tour. Consider stopping at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant in Bird-in-Hand or Dienner’s Country Restaurant in Ronks.
Crayola Factory, Easton
Nestled in the LeHigh Valley, Easton, Pennsylvania is home to the Crayola Experience. More than a dozen interactive exhibits will encourage not only your children, but you as well, to explore your creative side! The $12 admission will gain you admittance as well as a few cool souvenirs, plus you get to take home almost everything that you create. You’ll get to see crayons and markers being made in the Factory itself. The average stay at the Factory, according to the Crayola website, is two hours, but since it’s self-guided, you can stay as long as you like. There are several restaurants and other things to do, including a Crayola gift shop, in the area.
