Everyone is familiar with some of the more well-known wine regions like Napa Valley and Tuscany. Thanks to the growing popularity of wine in every country, more places around the world are trying to delve into the wine making business. What this means is more varieties when it comes to wines and easier accessibility to it. The following places are some up and coming wine regions that may end up producing some of the world’s best wines in the next few years.

Lodi, California

Californians doesn’t lack in great places to get wine and there’s even more of it to come. Located about 1 ½ hours from Napa Valley, Lodi isn’t new to the process of growing and selling wine. However, they recently ventured into having their own wineries. The current count is about 80, with more to come. Red wines are what Lodi is becoming known for.

What To Try: Lodi is starting to experiment with many of their wines. Here you can find some bold choices like Portugal’s touriga nacional and some good, yet inexpensive wines like L’Uvaggio di Giacomo Primitivo.

Tasmania, Australia

Tasmania isn’t just known for their animals, their wine region is up and coming as well. Throughout the area there are about 160 producers, with most of them available to meet with visitors and discuss their wines. The maritime climate of this area allows for a lot of unique wines to be produced here.

What To Try: The are many interesting wines to try in this region. These include dry Rieslings, shiraz and a burgundy that is similar to pinot noir.

Maule Valley, Chile

Chile is not generally known for its wine with only around 13 wine regions in the entire country. They recently have started to change this by trying to grow vineyards in some very extreme places like the Andes Mountains and the Atacama Desert. They are having some success which makes Maule Valley an up and coming wine region.

What To Try: The wines produced here tend to be of traditional varieties. These include sauvignon blanc and cabernets.

Bekaa Valley, Lebanon

Despite the fact that this area is considered to be the world’s oldest wine-producing region, it’s still not well-known to the rest of the world. They are trying to change this by bringing in new producers that can make anything from viogniers to merlots.

What To Try: There are quite a few wine varieties to choose from. Local favorites include the plush red blends and the floral muscats.

Tokaj, Hungary

Hungarians are serious about growing this wine region. They are receiving around $374 million dollars over the next five years to make this happen. This area is relatively large with around 5,5000 hectares of vineyards. Tokaj primarily uses white grapes to make it’s wines.

What To Try: The most popular wine in Tokaj right now is the furmint. It is dry and citrusy and is an alternative to chardonnay.
